More likely he's putting his bike on a stand, spinning the wheels, and timing how long it takes them to stop spinning. This "test" means very little.

I used to be a freak about keeping the chain clean, and regularly cleaned the drivetrain with strong solvents. Once I stopped doing that, chain life dramatically improved.

It will work fine(I've done it). When I first went 11 speed, I did it on a tight budget, and skipped the 7800 to 9000 crankset upgrade.
