If the plug is a tight fit a rubber mallet comes in handy. Top down with adhesive tape is a no-brainer, never had it unravel gripping the bars. Prefer a clean look at the top of the bars.

The wheels on my 77 900 are 27 inch, no issues. I think the frame looks better with a slightly bigger wheel. Tires are Continental Supersports 27 x 1 1/8in, but plenty of room for 1 1/4 in tires....

I have put that Shimano freewheel on all my vintage rides, combined with a KMC chain. Big improvement in shifting, saved all the old freewheels for posterity, or if I need a wall hanger.
