Parts can be reasonably cheap on eBay, if you can minimize the shipping, but if you really want to jump in, buy another bike for parts and salvage the bits...

The easiest way I know is to keep the tooth count similar.
so if you have a 46 in the front and a 16 in the back and then drop it to a 42, raise the back to a 20 and all should be fine.
