I personally adjust the levers so there is a lot of travel but I can get my hands right around the lever at the bite point.
It depends on the size and strength...

That's a start and maybe enough but maybe not. Depends on the condition of the fasteners.

So likely the cones are turning when you tighten the wheel nuts.
You need to tighten the locknut up against the cone to hold it in place.
Difficult if you don't have a cone spanner.

And even if it did you have a spare axle.
You might have to swap other parts to make the freehub work. Ds side...

There is also the fact that while the bb may be perfectly serviceable now it can seize in there and be a real pain to remove when you do need to.
It's been in there ten years so I would remove it...
