Retrofitting a modern drivetrain on an old bike, caveats?

I have this bike in a size that doesn't fit me: http://bianchiusa.com/05_bergamo.html That's a 7-speed cassette, a 3-speed hub, and a single chainring in the front.

Are there any shoes that come in a size >50 euro though? My LBS acts like there aren't.

I tried the shimano 50s with the velcro straps all the way loose and they didn't work for me.

Componentry seems to be a mix of "golden arrow" (600 I think?) and altus with tourney cranks. Maybe some stuff was replaced by a previous owner.
