The BB should work fine but the best way is just trial and error.

There's nothing wrong with half step gearing...

Cool beans. I paid $90 for my Sekine but I don't think I overpaid for it, :). It has an odd BB (BSC threading but 70mm shell) so hopefully it's in good shape and the crank arms have an odd taper so...

This is such a nice bike. Is this a Mercier 300? I'm assuming that it is based on the forged drop outs and parts. I would have posted my mid 60s Peugeot PR 10 but I paid $60 for it!

I reckon if you own a Varsity, you probably don't want to ride the boat anchor, err I mean bike, long distance in any case so this is the perfect saddle to remind you to keep the rides short, :)
