It is not an average, and it doesn't apply to older people. It was based on some very rough observations of groups of younger people. Once the age number gets large it doesn't really work at all....

For those of us who live in the hills, average speed is meaningless unless accompanied by a feet of climbing per mile number. Pretty much any ride around here is greater than 1,000 feet per 10 miles....
