The only real advantage a 'short' cage has over a 'long' cage is they shift a bit more precise and are lighter. If you have a 1x setup your going to want a big gears in back, really no disadvantage...

Regular shoes are just fine, I've used everything from Vans, to flip flops to running shoes...all work about the same. I do like the thinner soles of shoes like Vans, they feel a bit more stable.
