With it's first magazine, does that mean fixed riding isn't a sub-culture anymore?

oh look out some one's being cynical, isn't that awesome. maybe next he'll comment on how he's cooler than other people because he heard about a band two months before everyone else, and how now they've sold out because more than five people have heard them. Please kind sir, enlighten us more!

Though you may consider him a cynic, Ben Cousins' comment is actually very accurate. Riding or racing a fixed gear bike is by no means an underground lifestyle, especially when veiwed in the historical context of track racing and roadies training on fixed gear bikes. It is much more accurate to state, as Ben did rather pretentiously, that the underground phenomenon is urban street riding on fixies. I don't think there is much chance of that becoming mainstream, seeing as how most middle class Americans are afraid of physical activity and danger What is the point of trying to keep a commercialy driven "scene" underground though? Don't you think it would be better if fixed gear bikes were more widely availible? It's like saying, "I wish it was harder to find my favorite kind of food." Unless you consider riding fixies to be a fashion, and are making a statment like "I hope no one else buys a shirt like mine." I guess that would make sense.

Most people just think I'm an idiot for riding a bike in the first place. Actually it's more like: "GEEE I wish I could ride a bike that much." They still call road bikes "ten speeds" so I'm not getting any cool points for riding fixed. I think they justt assume DUI.

I think in a smaller facet of life like this (i.e. - a "FIXED" magazine), it is harmless. I do like your parallel luckycat and sympathize completely. But I also remember my first punk show in 83 - I got called a poseur cuz I was new. Odd thing - I have seen more people wear a studded belt one day and throw it in the trash the next cuz it had served a fashion purpose of theirs. I do not see these people at the shows I still go to...
Rest assured, the true of heart will remain. The others will find it too hard or no longer cool at pone point. And then we can buy all their shiit on eBay.
