Why would anyone ride a fixed gear?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why would anyone ride a fixed gear?

I dont understand it. The only thing I can think of if it were free. Why? Besides being hip and telling people about your "fixie", what good are they?

You can do tricks on them. And they're super, super cheap to fix.

They can smooth out a pedal stroke in a hurry, and can get you stronger in a hurry too. Use mine early season on the road, then on the track during the year for fun.

Fixed gear/track bikes are great.

I am converting my old road bike into a fixed gear. I can't wait. Just got some Cane Creek brake levers today. All I need now is a BB and rear wheel.

Bikes: hand built fixie, Lightspeed Sienna D/A

I use mine to work on my pedal stroke. I have back injury that, for some reason, caused a dead spot on my rotation. Using my fixie helped fix it. I ride it around the neighborhood (to the store, etc.), and when I am riding with my daughter.

For me, fixed gear riding is fun and a switch from a regular road bike. That's the difference. Some say fixie's help smooth out their pedal stroke. If that's what you seek, get rollers or do one legged drills on a trainer - it's much more effective.

It's like sex. Once you've tried it, you'll see what the fuss is about.

If you are that clueless about what a fixed gear is, do some background research (try google), phrase your question in a more intelligent, compelling way and you might get more reasonable answers. Personally, I've only answered this question like a million times on BF. Try searching.

Yeah, yeah, the guy is skidding. Whatever.

By the way, I hear that fixed gear bikes are fun. I also hear that golf is fun. I don't want to play golf, but I can live with other people doing it.

Where's my popcorn? This is getting good!

To the original poster- look in the Clydesdale forum for two posts on the subject that answer the question without so much angst. A couple of the guys there have taken up fixies lately.
