I've ordered a wheelset for my bike finally...also..bike should be headed to powdercoating sometime this week.

I have a question regarding which bottom bracket to order for the cranks that I already have.

I did a small amount of research, but still don't know which bottom bracket is correct.

I think I have a crank made by Sugino. The model is "Maxy." Here is a picture. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

also. i don't have the "caps" that screw into the threading to cover the end of the spindle. do these "caps" come with the bottom bracket? are they usually part of the crank set i already have?

I just test fit any JIS square taper bottom bracket that I happen to have on hand. Then I estimate how much longer or shorter spindle length I think that I need.

The caps usually come with the crank but they're a generic size and thread so you can use caps from any old crank. They're only cosmetic anyway so you don't really need them. Newer allen bolt-style bottom brackets are usually designed to eliminate the need for the caps.

The caps also help keep grit out of the crank threads. You can usually get snap or screw-one ones from an LBS, or from a place like loosescrews.com

FWIW my sugino Maxy crankset is ISO taper, not JIS.

that's very odd, I'm surprised that anything other than the early MIGHTY models have anything other than JIS...but if yours does have ISO taper I would assume it to be a very early MAXY, which the OP's is not.

From what I gather, I should be looking for a JIS square taper bottom bracket.

I'm assuming that both the wheelset, and the frame that I will be using will determine which JIS square taper bb to get. Is this true?

I once heard a rumor that Maxy's had their own taper that was slightly different than either JIS or ISO.

yeesh...things like this make me leery of spending the time ordering something online...only to have it arrive and not fit.

hmmmm.

My Maxy has a Sugino bb and spindle to match... do not have the measurement on this as it was nicely fitted to my bike and had no reason to check the width or taper.

If you fit an ISO crank to a JIS spindle it will sit 4.5 mm farther out than it would on an ISO spindle of the same length while fitting a JIS crank on an ISo spindle will put it 4.5 mm closer in than if it was installed on the same length JIS spindle.

Mixing cranks and spindles does not usually cause any problem although fitting a JIS to an ISO spindle wil cause issues if the crank is removed repeatedly to service the bottom bracket... with sealed cartridge bb's this is not a problem as the service intervals can be years and many thousands and thousands of miles.

Whew...have been doing a lot of definition and bicycle term look-up lately.

I think I'll wait till my wheelset gets here, and take my frame, wheelset, and cranks to the LBS in order to test fit bb's.

I'm still not completely sure what I should order, if I were to order online.
