Giro d'Vino roll call

Giro d'Vino
MyLilPony and I will be there, I know some BFers are going, but I don't know who.
We hope to arrive a bit before 8.

This is the first organized ride we did. We had signed up for the 30 mile version and were really worried we'd be OK.

We stopped at every winery on the route, tasted very lightly, bought and sent our bottles back to the finish. It took a long time.

The lunch at the end, with door prizes (including a set of Williams wheels!) and the band were a lot of fun.

Bigbossman, bikingshearer and I are headed over in one car and LanceOldstrong and Midland will be there as well. Our plan was to meet up in the parking lot around 8:15. Since we get an extra hour of sleep that night with the daylight savings clock change, maybe we can get BBM out of bed a few minutes earlier and meet you there around 8.

We did this ride last year - I think it was Midland's first organized ride - and it's a nice "we're getting to the end of the season" ride. No climbing to speak of, casual and friendly stops, wine, and a live band at the end. I also bought 3 or 4 bottles and had them sent back to the start/finish to pick up. Love the Petite Syrah from Vino Con Brio Winery!

Much to my annoyance the weather report is now predicting a 50% chance of rain.
I still have painful memories of a Wine Country Century in a downpour. Here's hoping it's either no rain, or at least a light rain.
I bike commute rain or shine, but riding for fun in the rain is something I just don't want to do.
There are wineries, so perhaps sheltering may be fun.

I am in rain or shine. I will ride my Univega/Tiagra special with the Raceblade fenders if it rains.

I could ride my full fender commuter bike -- really a mountain bike with skinny tires and a rack and lights. But I won't.
I'll just have to scrub the grit off the Roubaix ... and my back.

If the forecast is correct, then it'll be a game-day decision for me. I won't start a ride in the rain.

Should be "Giro di Vino"... nobody with one semester of Italian would've made this mistake. (and by that I mean Delta Velo, not Cowboy Curtis)

I was too late to sign up, too, but I plan to go rogue. No, I will not eat their goodies or drink their Cytomax, but I do plan to do the ride and perhaps use their porta-a-potties if the need arises.

As for weather reports, it looks to me like the chances of rain on Sunday are lower in the Lodi area, where the ride will be, than in the Bay Area. I may drag out the Paramount (it has fenders) or I may risk getting the Cooper or the De Rosa wet. We'll see.

As for BBM - hitch up your skirts, John . . . unless you're afraid of getting your sister's culottes wet. If nothing else, pull the Giant out of mothballs. It's plastic, so it won't rust.

Hmm.... the Giant is a good idea.... didn't think of it. Not afraid of getting wet - I just hate cleaning the bike, or subjecting it to that kind of treatment. Some folks have more pride of ownership than others.

I'll be there. My son and son-in-law will be with me. We've done 4 of our own wine rides in Lodi. This will be our first Giro D'Vino.

If your intent was to inspire us to ride, I believe you have failed...

I don't mind a little wet stuff (hey, I grew up in Oregon!), but no combination of raincoats, fenders, plastic bikes and HTFU would make me want to ride 60+ miles in the rain in 25-35 mph winds!

I'm with bossman, if it looks nasty the day of, I'd rather find a nice place for breakfast and tell stories of epic rides we've done in the past!

I've really been looking forward to this ride, having paid and all.
I think I'll make a Sunday decision.

The darn pin-point forecast National Weather Service site says:

Sunday: Showers. High near 61. West wind 9 to 14 mph becoming south. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

There's a link to their "Special Weather Statement"
...WET AND WINDY WEATHER EXPECTED ON SUNDAY OVER INTERIOR NORTHERN
CALIFORNIA...

A STRONG COLD FRONT IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS INTERIOR NORTHERN
CALIFORNIA ON SUNDAY...BRINGING RAIN...MOUNTAIN SNOW AND GUSTY
WINDS TO THE AREA.

IN THE VALLEY...RAINFALL AMOUNTS AROUND AN INCH ARE EXPECTED IN
THE NORTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY INCLUDING REDDING AND RED
BLUFF...TAPERING TO A QUARTER TO ONE HALF INCH FROM SACRAMENTO TO
STOCKTON. SOUTHERLY WIND GUSTS FROM 30 TO 40 MPH ARE POSSIBLE
FOR SEVERAL HOURS DURING THE DAY ON SUNDAY.

+1 - Seriously.

It's not a matter of HTFU (and that term is getting to be pretty over-used), it's a matter of having fun. Sorry, but rain and wind don't sound like a lot of fun. I'd put up with it if I were duck hunting.... but then again, duck hunting for years out in foul weather is one of the reasons I gave that sport up.

Plus - I don't have a rain/beater bike anymore, since I sold off the Pinarello.

I'm willing to make the drive and call it from the parking lot, though, if that is the decision.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I don't have a good beater rain car since I let the Ferrari go.

It was the only aluminum bike I owned - didn't rust. Made it perfect for wet weather.

From: https://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/019.html#SPE

In the valley... rainfall amounts around a quarter to three
quarters of an inch are expected for the valley. Local ponding of
water is possible on roads with Leaf clogged storm drains.
Southerly wind gusts from 30 to 40 mph are possible for several
hours during the day on Sunday. This may cause falling trees and
tree limbs.

... and Lord knows what else...

As Phil might say:

"At this years running of the Giro D' Vino it should really be a day when we see the Belgians come forward and try to get in an early break that stays away all day. This is the kind of day that will really favor them. Midland and Oldstrong will have to dig deep into their suitcase of courage to stay with these boys from the Hell of The North."

... in other words, Midland and I are locked in and locked on for this one. Rain or shine.
We will be up there about 8:15 - 8:30.

I'm out due to family commitment. I feel like I should be more upset that I'm missing the ride, but given the weather outlook... well, have fun in the rain. I want to hear epic stories about wind, deluge and the hours of post-ride bike cleaning.
