Family Photo! Mr. & Mrs. Standalone + kids on two bikes!

I didn't use the car to get to work at all this week, and even skipped the train on Thursday and Friday to put 67 miles on my xtra and pick up my son at daycare. Friday night we hit a 6th birthday party and had our picture snapped on our way home.

The boys are six and four. The big guy has just graduated to the back of the Schwinn, and loves it! He's a total powerhouse. He's so light that it's like having an electric assist. He loves it, and clamors to ride. My wife is jealous of the extra pair of legs I have to help on the hills.

What kind of bike is your wife riding? And did the big "basket" on the back come with it? Looks like a nice way to haul cargo.

It's a good option to look into. The Madsen bucket can haul 4 little ones. The "bucket" is designed so that it drops down on either side of the frame, lowering the center of gravity. It's a good design concept. It's no joke riding it up a hill fully loaded, but that hasn't kept us from putting about 600 miles on it in 10 or 11 months. I even rode it on my 33 mile r/t route to work one day. (operative wordnce... my extracycle is much lighter.) The front basket is not original to the bike. Madsen offers a much nicer and more robust option. Our Madsen is the original model. Some geometry changes were made to the newer one for '11.

Me w/the Madsen:

Wow! What an impressive array of cargo bikes! The miles you're putting in are incredible. Good post.

Thanks. Note that the 67 miles is divided over those two days. But that's my weekly routine now.

That Madsen has around 5-600 miles on it. (I accidentally reset the odo around 350-400 miles) The Xtracycle (not pictured) has eaten up around 250 miles of road since I assembled it this spring. It really is doable. But not quite always-- my legs were beat today, so I drove to work, but I really have made a big impact in my driving in the two years I've been commuting by bike. My main commuter is my Dahon Espresso.
