Ur-Tourer Fred Birchmore is 100 Years old today
Here's a fascinating story about a guy who toured 'round the world on a single speed bike in the 1930's, Fred Birchmore:

Probably of most interest to many bikers out there, he could very well be the original 'fred,' a sometimes (usually?) derogatory classification used by some cyclists to describe someone who's a different kind of cyclist. Here's the Wikipedia article on it:
