Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hit! By a Squirrel! (warning, pics)

I was cleaning up my computer and came across the old pics. I don't think I ever shared them on this forum.

Let this be a lesson that any animal can be a potential hazard.

Here is the story:
2 seasons ago, about this time of year I was on my regular Sat morning group ride. I was pulling (~mid 20s at the moment), and I noticed a squirrel on the right margin. Just as I was about to come along side, he faked right, then jumped straight left in my direction. My crank immediately locked, but thank goodness the rear wheel kept spinning. I peeled off hard left without braking, letting the line through as they slowed. Luckily, myself, the other riders and my bike were relatively unharmed. The squirrel didn't make it. It really was amazing that nobody got hurt, and I'm still extremely thankful for that. Everyone in the line reacted perfectly.

Glad it wasn't the front wheel. That would've been even messier (for you, anyway).

I hit some nightcrawlers the other morning. Must has been, oh, I don't know - a bunch. I nearly fell. But I didn't.

Those nightcrawlers are scary and kinda slimy, too.

I sure hope that never happens again.

Oh. And this was on The Road. I guess if I was on a MUP I would have really been in bad shape.

You got the lucky end of that encounter for sure. The way his back looks could have been your skin...

Good thing you caught it before it did any damage to the bike or yourself. Check this one out, saw this before on another forum.

Multi-use pavement, municipal urban pavetrail, stuff like that.

Hey, that squirrel is half skinned to start with, some celery and carrots and you got a good stew. Sorry, glad there are no rashes to go with that.
