Considering what a Brommie costs, a rack that costs nearly as much as the base model is quite a bit of $$$.

I am a few days away from being able to produce racks here in my shop... have been tooling up my shop and working on custom rack designs for the Surly Pugsley at the main shop and should have that prototype ready by the weekend.

I know quite a few Brommie owners... maybe they would like to be test pilots for a custom rack.

Maybe it is where I am from... with current material costs we build will custom racks for around $200.00 (front or rear).

Ah the bid and counter bid, It's why I stay away from That 'bay.. maybe version 2 will be less busy,
less steel, & weigh less.

I sent out a few inquiries to my friends who own Bromptons to see if they would like to send one of them to spend some time in the spa so I can look at a folding rack design with the deal being, if they love it, they can have it at my material cost.

I worry the shipping would kill me so I`ll just wait for a prototype to be ready. Take a look at Vik`s tikit rack while you are at it. If you could make a "one size fits all" rack for those great bikes then no need to worry about the future.

Now about a matching rear rack with better wheels..

Edit: Actually, I want more: Same type front platform for 20" bikes. GOOD front rack for 20" bikes and/or lowrider type frontrack (20" and 16") like the Tikit one.

Trough the years peopel have asked for good solutions to front luggage for small wheel bikes again and again.

I have the older Dahon front rack https://www.flickr.com/photos/riffraf...n/photostream/ on three bikes (similar to the one on thors site now I think) but I am not happy with them since there is conflict with the brake what ever type I try to use it with. They are at the moment on bikes I converted to hub brake and that is a good solution for a shopper type bike but a bit heavy and cumbersome for a true folder and or travelbike.

I have been looking for the Tern version of the same rack (my opinion) but only found it in a shop in Canada that is not willing to ship to my location. On that rack the rails is lifted compared to the Dahon rack so I think the conflict with the brakes are not like with the Dahon one. The rails also can be used as a platform since they are abowe the wheel, unlike the Dahon rack. Also only rated for 10 kg.

I always liked the Tikit lowrider type frontrack. Make them for Brompton and 20" wheels also plse! Since a folder benefits from loading most of the weight in front we need good solutions for doing just that!

I have been playing around with two types of standard lowriders on my white 20" folder but can not find a good fit that does not end up huge when folded and wrong angel on the top rails.

Front platform for 20" bikes: If the bike is (or is used as a) "shopper" type bike we need good racks! If the bike can be folded with it to a reasonable size (still possible to fold and bag the bike for public transport) it is great but a wide rack (foldable when dismounted to travel with the bike and bike can be transported unfolded with it on rack of bus or car) is also good. Eyelets for fenders is not a good place for mounting on small forks so I suggest axel and brakestuds mount or P clamps. Have you noticed how fietsbob again and again mention his older steel Bromton luggageframe? I do since I have one myself so I know what he is talking about. It is STRONG, that is why. Still it is hanging off a piece of plastic (B frontblock) so there is a limit for what it can take.

Sometimes when looking trough european webshops I find lots of front racks for bikes. They also sell them for childrens bikes! I always think I should order one and try it on a folder (they are cheap) but always forget. I guess that is a good project for x-mas!

You need to cancel x-mas and start working on our racks!

Noted, closed, that was the only bidder, higher than anyone else was willing to pay, my guess.


The Use of the Brompton head tube Block and making it removable will gain usefulness
and make them easier to sell as a Plug and Play product.

Earlier bag support racks were All steel, stamped & folded sheet steel fit over the frame block.

now the tubing is aluminum and the joining parts are Nylon
and the connection Pop rivets.

It all depends. If you look in some of the Flikr groups some peopel load theyr b`s heavily both front and rear. I like the lugage block system a lot (that is why I have started installing the system to my other small wheel bikes) but it has got its limitations.

A steel bagframe is great (I know, I own one) but nothing is stronger than its weakest point, and I fear that is the luggageblock in some sort of nylon/plastic. You could of course have one made from a different material but then the weakest point would be the two 5mm srews keeping it in place.

DIY on the existing system can take you a long way but I think if you want to go really heavy and big you need a front rack.

Looked at the thread about my DIY and realised somebody linked to a site with plenty racks. Been wondering if one of them, this one https://www.fahrradladen-berlin.de/Vo...teuerrohr.html would do, still only rated for 8-10 kg. Cheaper than the e-bay one at least.

One Bene Sugg:
on loading the Front end.
tie a toe strap Between the Bag support rack Handle and the steering Mast .
then the whole load is not levering on the frame Block all on it's own.

It looks like the rack has some nice brazing but it's pricey a would probably appeal more to riders who don't need a bike that folds into a small package.

Making this rack does require a lot of work... at times building a rack can be as involved as building a frame and there are far more joints and mitred ends on this rack than on an entire frame.

Almost like making jewelry..

That's why I stopped building racks... especially fillet brazed ones as opposed to welded. The price of a product cannot always be justified by the amount of work put into it.

One would make jigs first, then the rack, each one after that is easier to produce..
