For those not in the know, Geek Hunting is what my buds and I call it when we dress like Freds, ride old steel road bikes, journey out to local Ironman training grounds after work, and destroy as many aerobar-leaners as possible. Cargo shorts are a must. Neon vests are encouraged as are long sleeve white dress shirts. Skateboard/BMX helmets can add to the fun. No one likes to be passed at these training areas, and everyone tries to pass as many other riders as possible. It's just tradition.

Joey, it's funny reading your site and even seeing your "hunting posse."

My co-worker who has been riding with me for a while for a couple months spent about $6,000 on his Bianchi and wears all the spandex known to man. I got my (one and only) bike on Craiglist (hybrid) in the barter section and often wear gym shorts and an old 1990's adidas sweatshirt on my ride. Only upgrade is cycling shoes.

I do the same thing with him, let him lead - watching him pedal (trying to lose me) till his lungs explode - then when a nice hill comes up, he gets decimated.... every time. Then I put a couple hundred yards between us.

I've often thought about upgrading the back of my bike with a rack, and a milk crate - just to piss him off.

Hmm, I dunno. My training rides are generally governed by some purpose, whether I'm staying in some particular HR zone or whatever. It's entirely possible for some random fred to pass me at various times. I rode out to do some intervals yesterday, I was going pretty darn slow the way out.

One good way to know if you are faster than someone is to enter a race...

Catch any commuters on your training cyclist hunting video?

Yesterday I was walking along the sidewalk and noticed an old lady hobbling along with her cane. I upped my pace and pulled up beside her. She was using one of those 4-point stability canes. Super inefficient and heavy. I dropped the hammer and left her in my dust. Pure awesomeness!

What's the deal with all the dirt and debris covering so much of the road? Looks almost like flooding debris or something.

Ha! I can top that, I was in a Big Box Super Store and while walking down the potato chip/snack isle I passed a whole gaggle of fatsos on motorized shopping carts.

IMHO, A lugged steel racing frame, helmet mirror and cargo pants don't make you a Fred especially when you're rolling on the Kysrium ES wheels and using Campy Carbon brifters.

I noticed that also. Only thing retro-looking on that bike was the frame itself.

The older video seemed much more in tune with the idea - old road bike, all street clothing except the shoes, etc. However I like your newer camera setup on the bike. Only thing I would love to see would be another camera rear-facing that might catch whatever reactions from the tri geeks.

Interesting video and concept. If it gets you motivated to ride, then I don't have any problems with it!

I personally don't care much about passing others or getting passed. I'm just trudging along as best I can, and I know I'll get passed because I'm a slow@$$. If I pass someone else hey, it's cool I guess but no big deal. I guess it is a bit disheartening when I get passed by a girl on the MUP, or worse yet a girl on a MTB. But I just keep trucking along.

Nice video, but needs more recumbents. I know some velo riders that would really embarrass those guys (and joey too). Fun stuff, though.

You need to use a real Fred bike instead of that "sleeper". Where are the fenders, lights, panniers, fat tires. You get extra points if you use drum brakes and IGH. For additional fun, you could ring a bell as you passed.

IME most SRS riders, will still think it's a fail sleeper bike even with nice bits.
