Hi,

Just curious if any of y'all know where I could find a metal buckle like the kind used on Zo bags... my ladypal has an ancient timbuk2 bag (it predates the plastic cam buckles...) and she wants to retrofit it with a strap that is easy to adjust on the fly. I checked out the usual buckle suspects (strapworks, seattlefabrics, MEC), but no dice. I don't even know what this particular kind of buckle is called, so it's hard to google it.

This probably isn't what you want, but my friend took his old Zo down to the shoe repair store and had them install a GM seatbelt (ala Chrome) from the wrecking yard. Works great, and cost all of about 6 bucks.

You can also find stuff like that at www.strapworks.com - they have a whole metal buckles section. Personally, I prefer plastic.

Oddly enough there isn't one listed on the strapworks link above. Odd because it's a very common webbing strap buckle, standard stuff if there ever was a standard. If you search "webbing strap buckle" you can probably find a place to buy it locally. It will eat a timbuk2 strap though

I'm going to cut the strap somewhere in the middle and add the buckle in-line with a D ring laced into the lower end. This will allow the strap to function much like the one on my Baileyworks Pro.

what makes them extraordinary is subject to debate, but those that think that they are extraordinary think this because: 1-they are handmade by one guy, 2-this guy has been handmaking them by himself for 20+ years, 3-he is "legit" in all the ways most people decide legitimacy, 4-punk rock diy, 5-comfy and durable plus if anything fails on them (which rarely happens) he is happy to fix.

I landed / slid on my Zo bag in two serious motorcycle accidents in the mid 90s, ie. freeway crashes going 80+mph. Both the bag and myself escaped with only superficial scuffs. I think the bag was at least 5years old when the first accident happened. It had been used as a full time bicycle / motorcycle messenger bag since it was made. That bag is still being used.

I have lost 3 Zo bags. I still get sad when I think about the red one...

Taco - REI sells them in their stores in packs of two. I think they're $0.80/pack. There's usually a carousel near the hiking or camping gear with buckles and lots of other assorted hardware.
