Bikes: Raleigh conversion (hours spent making it look like a Pista); Porter Track, Samson Track, Leto Roadie.

Sugino 75: Designed to work with Shimano BB?

That's what they're saying on the Branford Bike site. To wit:

"Designed for use with any Shimano tapered 109 mm bottom bracket."

This kind of overlaps with a question I posted in a dying thread a ways down, but: is this true, or is the 75 merely compatible with Shimano BBs? If I get 75s, how much of a disservice would one be doing oneself by not getting the matching BB?

Bikes: EAI Bare Knuckle track, Gianni Motta track, Lemond road bike, Nishiki road fixed conversion, piles of parts.

Well... I don't know if designed is the right word. The 75 uses square tapered BBs... Shimano makes square taper BBs. Good luck finding a 109mm Shimano BB though. The Shimano 7610 Dura Ace track BB hasn't been made in a while as Dura Ace cranks went to the splined interface a few years ago.

The closest that's readily available would be a 108mm or 110mm Shimano UN72 BB. I've heard you can use spacers to realign that last 1mm difference.

edit: Doh, Baxtefer is right, 107mm, not 108.

I have sugino 75 doubles on a benotto with shimano BB 107mm. perfect. They require shorter BBs.

"designed" to use a JIS taper spindle. such as is found in a shimano BB.

Zerobug means a 107mm or 110 mm UN72 BB. they actually have the same length spindle on the drive side. the 110 is assymetrical.

the trackstar website lists shimano XT and UN53 BBs as options for sugino 75s.

Damn, this **** is always so complicated.

Okay, so JIS is a given. The Sugino BB is 109, but a Shimano 107 gets us a perfect chainline, so what gives? Lack of standardization in measurement? 2mm too small to make a difference (ha!)?

and not even 2mm of difference. just 1 (on the drive side) if both the sugino 109 and the shimano 107 are symmetrical, which i believe they are.

Use the Sugino BB, the cranks work with the shimano BB. But are a tad different. In the end your cranks will love you for it.

Bikes: too damn many

tad = a little bit

the taper on the sugino spindle is indeed different than the shimano spindle. the shimano works, but the sugino spindle was MADE for the crankset. if i were doing it, i would use the sugino spindle... or a phil wood bb, who makes one with the sugino taper.

yeah, thanks for the dick-tionary definition of "tad" there.

so does "sugino taper" = ISO taper? because that does not seem to be the premise on which several people speak.

please, someone clear this up!

we have in this thread assertions that sugino cranks are compatible with JIS BBs and that they are *not* compatible with JIS BBs.

well, which one is it!!!!??!!!

no one said that sugino 75s are *not* compatible with JIS or shimano. there is fit, and then there is *better* fit. manufactorer differences i suppose

i guess i'm just not sure what a "sugino taper" is. is it different than both ISO and JIS?

Did you not read my post, I want want everyone with Sugino 75's to ride the Sugino BB. It is much better for the cranks, chainline, etc, etc. I care, if I didnt care I would tell them to ride the Shimano BB. Ride the Sugino BB with Sugino 75's, please.

habitus, I'm not sure if you mean that you forgot to read his post or that you forgot to not read his post. There's too much confusion in this thread, can you clear this up for me?

Bikes: some but not enough

I'm confused too
how do u pronounce miche? how do u pronouce mundial? does it have the same taper as miche and Campy?
Why did Shimano stop making the UN9 series BB?
Is a new UN53 better than an older UN72?

but seriously, I can't decypher if the sugino and shimano tapers are the same or if the sugino and Campy tapers are the same from this thread.

juvi-kyle, you're wrong. sugino cranks use a JIS taper, which is what shimano uses. there is no fabled "sugino taper." the sugino bottom bracket spindle is a JIS taper. it is certainly nice to use the sugino bb with sugino cranks, but certainly not imperative, and it most definitely won't make a difference to the cranks.

if there was a "sugino taper," they'd use it for their XD series road/touring/mountain cranks, and they'd be making their own sealed bottom brackets, but they don't, instead, they use the plain old JIS taper.

as far as phil wood making a "sugino taper" BB, they don't. they make JIS, and campy, and another spindle with the JIS taper that can be used with '93 and earlier campy cranks, and others that require a longer spindle. the tapers are the same, but the spindles are just longer.

Phil actually looked into this elusive Sugino taper issue and came to the conclusion that their 108 Shimano taper bb works perfectly well with the Sugino 75 cranks.
