PSA Test and biking
I just turned 65 and for the first time ever have been riding my bike between ten and fifteen miles a day. I logged over 1000 miles since the middle of May. One of the things I have noticed is a one point elevation in my annual PSA blood test. The Dr. mentioned that biking and the pressure on the soft tissues can elevate the PSA and cause Prostatis. Anyone ever hear of that??

At 65 it was going to rise to rise anyway due to your age. We do not worry unless the PSA goes up two points in a year. However, if you did ride 24 hrs before the test, the pressure on the perineum may have elavated the PSA, or if you ejaculated within 24 hrs it will also cause it to go up a little (sorry about the candor). I would not worry as long as the PSA is below 4.0.

My PSA has been steady at 3.5 for about ten years, and this spring when I began riding 2 to 3 miles a day it went up to 3.8 and then in Oct. after I was riding 12 to 15 miles a day it went up to 4.6. The upper limit for a man my age is 4.5 so I will have it checked but the likelyhood is that it is bike related. Hope so anyway. Will keep you posted if you are interested.
Urologist I spoke with said that is a common occurance with bikers.
