Newbie Introduction and Collection - What is your Collection? Wishes?

Hi,

I am newbie on this forum and must say that I enjoy very much reading all of these threads. It validates my desire to collect and hoard obsessively all of the bikes and bike parts that I have. It is comforting to see that I am not alone in this, perhaps quixotic, quest.

My current bikes:

1- Austro Daimler Ultima, 23", Reynolds 531 frameset with a mish-mash of components. Gipiemme hubs, Sugino cranks, KKT Pro Ace chrome pedals, Shimano 105 brakes (early aero), Sugino alloy seatpost. Early Shimano 105 SIS (for the wife). This was my very first, lightweight modern bike. Bought the frame sometime around 1983 from Supergo or some other mail order outfit.

2- Riggio 56 cm, Columbus SLX, Campy drop outs frame with mostly Campy SR and NR components. Superbe Pro brakes, Cinelli stem and handlebar. Selle San Marco Laser. SR LaPrade seatpost. Frame bought sometime in 1984 and put together shortly afterwards. Riggio was a bike and Campy importer from Buffalo, NY and had the frames made by Viner. There are no markings on the frame as the frames were spec'd out to have no markings. The only thing on the bottom bracket is a serial number. Riggio is no longer in business. Most of the components from this bike were transferred from the AD above.

3- Masi Gran Criterium, 54 cm, serial # 220. All Campy NR and bought from a little old lady for $100. Yes! that is true. I found this bike through my local Pennysaver and was able to pick it up right away. The bike is practically brand new with very little miles. Although one of the rims has been replaced with an Ambrosio rim. I think most of the Masis had Martano rims originally. The little old lady bought this bike sometime in 1973-74 and did not ride it very much. She was selling it because she was moving and retiring to Florida. My best find ever. (she only rode it on Sunday to go to church... :-) )

4- 1982 Trek 730, 22", 531 db frame, campy drop outs, Cinelli bottom bracket all Campy NR but for the headset, Tange Levin. Picked it up at a consignment shop for $150. The owner wanted $300 but I was able to talk him down. My first 'find'.

Bike frame that I stupidly threw away:

1- Legnano frame and fork. The one with the cotter pin style seatpost binder. After I got my AD and moved the components from the Legnano to it, I decided to put/leave the frame in the attic of my college off campus house. Left school, left town and the frame. 20 yrs later I was in town again and with the help of the Internet, I was able to find the phone number of the house. I called and explained my situation but the new homeowner told me that everything in the attic was thrown away when they moved in and hang up on me. Whaa! I still kick myself for doing that. I guess I already started to have too much crap.

What I need:

1- Reynolds 753 frame
2- Miyata Pro frame or bike
3- A Pogliaghi
4- Benotto 3000
5- Campy SR gruppo
6- Campy tool kit. The one in the wooden suitcase
7- Suntour Superbe gruppo
8- Shimano Dura Ace gruppo from the mid 80's
9- Galli gruppo
10- Mavic gruppo from the Lemond time frame (SSC)
11- Maybe a Zeus gruppo
12- Maybe a mix match of the best japanese 80's components (non Suntour or Shimano). Dia Compe brakes, Sugino cranks, SR, etc
13- It will be nice if all of these gruppos were mounted on different classic frames (3Rensho, Dave Moulton, Serotta, Paramount, etc)

Me? Immigrated from Panama (Central America) to Flushing NY. Rode a lot in the Kissena bike track (with my Legnano road bike) and met some of the folks running the races there. Went to college in the early 80's in Buffalo NY. Worked at the best bike shop there. Learned a great deal and met some nice people. Supposedly Steven Bauer was around one time but I missed him. Moved to Northern VA after college, found a job. Saw bits and pieces of the Tour Dupont. Have photos taken with Andy Hampsten and Raul Alcala (don't know where they are but there are somewhere in the house). Never raced. Rode quite a bit but never amounted to anything significant. I think I joined USCF at one time in my life but memory is fuzzy...

I apologize for the length of this post but it just grew and grew...

Could anybody else care to share their collections and experiences?

Thanks again for the great info in this forum and site.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

welcome aboard.

My collection is rather limited at the moment, but pretty specific in
what I'm after.

1) Trek 770 frame 1983 braze date, 1984 decals etc. waiting for components.
2) Trek 670 1985 all original except tires and saddle. Campy pat 85 Nuovo Record
gruppo.
3) 1975 RIH Campy Pat74 Gruppo (N.R.) Fiamme Reds (old logo), Clement Tubulars
4) 1989 Serotta Nova Special. Campy 8 speed on Mavic GP4 rims
5) 1994 Jan de Reus. Campy S.R. frankengruppo (few if any dates match) on
Record hubs, Gel330 rims.
6) ?? Zieleman the frame is currently languishing in the Netherlands, eventually
it will get here (I'm the eternal optimist!). Zieleman is my "holy Grail".
what I want?
1968 Pog.
Early 70's Colnago (or late 60's)
Jabo any year
Joco any year
Magneet, Locomotief.
Will probably get Gazelle, Batavus, Concorde (see a pattern here?).
A replacement 1976 Viscount Aerospace Pro (black & Silver) complete with
death fork.
Italian Track Iron, Japanese Track Iron.
Where in NoVa were you (are you?) I lived in Falls Church for 16 years.

Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

okay, lotek...I must sound like a goofball (more than usual?), but what is RIH? Don't give up on the Zieleman frame. Took me months to get the Hetchins from England, but it came.

What size Gazelle can you tolerate? Have a AA frame 531DB, was supposed to be a 57cm ct is bigger like 57 or 57.5 cc., forgot it is hanging from a hook as a bare frame at the moment.

Will have to list the squadron one day, what interests me at the present:

a Singer or Herse, (only can afford one, if that)
Hetchins with Hellenic stays.
"Playing Card" 'nago
'75 Klien, test rode one in late 1975, amazing lateral stiffness.

Luker,
RIH is the brand name of the Bustraan brothers in Amsterdam. It is currently
being run by Wim van der Kaaij who started as apprentice to the Bustraan
brothers in 1948.
RIH supplied the bikes for the Amstel Team, has 350+ national championships
and over 60 world and olympic titles.
There are some pics in the Classic Rides thread (just posted them today).

The Zieleman hasn't been shipped yet, they guy who has it sort of disappears
for weeks/months at a time. I have a friend over in the Netherlands who
has been trying to help get it shipped but no luck. BTW all the stuff that
I have had shipped from there, took 1 week or less to get here
(That includes 1 complete bike!).

Number6 57 is a bit large for me, I'm in the 54/55 cm range. Shame since
an AA Gazelle is of interest to me. (shhh, don't tell my wife!).
There is absolutely nothing in your list of interests that I would not have!

I am in Annandale / Fairfax, sort of behind Fairfax Hospital. The housing market has gone through the roof, several times. Scary.

I need to add to my 'need' list:

1- Shimano Dura Ace Black gruppo (late 70's ?).

Thanks for posting your collections. Great to see what's around.

Hmmm

My collection is modest but my desires are not

Pieced together a 80s Basso Columbus SL frame with a Super Record group I found on CampyOnly.com that I still consider my best score (very clean SR complete group including seatpost and built up wheelset w/Moskva 80 rims for ~250$ I forget the exact amount but that's max.) Only "problems" with that bike are the aluminum fork (couldn't find a good steel one), modern Record dual pivot brakes (I have the originals and I like to stop) and the shifting/braking modifications I have to do with all of my bikes to compensate for the lasting effects of my last motorcycle ride.

A clean Motobecane Gran Jubilee ca. 1978. Not real special, the earlier ones are better but it, or a similar year Grand Record, were the bike I wanted in the later 70s when all I could afford was a Nomade.

A Libertas acquired from Jack's Liquidation that is currently a fixie but I didn't hack it so it could be a derailleur bike in the future.

The early (ca 86) Cannondale I rode in college. Shimano 600EX mostly.

A modern LeMond Maillot Jaune (Reynolds 853 is nice) and my wife rides a modernish Colnago Master.

Wants: An early Merckx, not Falcon early, but one of his earlier products though that limited run of modern Molteni MX Leaders could sub. A 1970s Masi and on the esoteric side there was a 1930s Watsyn built 6 Day racer on eBay a few years back that looked great and went unbidded. If it reappears it'll get one bid anyhow. Also the idea of a 3Rensho with a complete Superbe group is appealing.

I'm sure there's others...

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

Yuyax,

Welcome. Here's my collection:

1- 1979 Raleigh Team Pro (753 frame from Ilkeston)
2- 1981 Miyata Pro
3- 1975 Pogliaghi
4- Benotto 3000
5- 1968 Legnano

Seriously though (much more modest than a lot of the guys here, but that's ok with me):

1965 Dunelt Racer (10-speed)
1969/70 Raleigh Professional Frame (still sanding the sucker down)
1973/74? Fuji "The Finest" (my current "A" ride)
1978 Raleigh Super Course
1979? Viscount Aero
1981 Peugeot Gran Sport (aka U-08)
1974 Raleigh Superbe
198? Raleigh Technium MTB (Lem, It works great but I canna ride 'er, she's too big. I have found a better home for her - if that's ok with you sir.)
and (shhh. don't tell... 2001 Magna mtb)

About the only bikes I have a "jones" for at the moment are a Raleigh Team Pro (753), Peugeot PX-10 or PY-10, Mercian Vincatorie (sp?) (853 frame). Will be several years before I get these and will be happily dwelling in Nirvana.

Confessional time - these are the bikes in my garage. I ride them all, but the OCLV hasn't seen much road time this year - and there's something wrong with the '73 Paramount bottom bracket.

The Trek collection -

1977 Trek TX900 (1st gen super record) - Mike Appel
1979 Trek TX930 (rigged for touring with fenders, etc) - Tim Isaccs
1981 Trek 959 (Black DA grouppo)
1982 Trek 970 (super record)
1984 Trek 760 (nuovo record)
1984 Trek 170 (super record) - Tim Isaacs
1985 Trek 760 (victory)
1985 Trek 2000 (2 of 'em. One stock, one 9 speed ultegra)
1994 Trek 5200 OCLV

The Raleighs

1978 Competition (fixie - campy gran sport)
1978 Professional (nuovo record)
1984 Team 753 (a British Team Olympic bike - super record )
2003 Team (Record 10)

The Italians

1974 Masi Gran Criterium (1st generation super record) - Baylis?
1978 Somec Special (1st year second generation super record)
1982ish Bianchi Nuovo Alloro (?) - Mostly Nuovo Record
1985 Pinarello Record (super record - working on a pantographed grouppo)

Oddballs -

1980 Araya (all original DA with a freehub)
1987 Klein Quantum Chorus

The Paramounts -

1973 Paramount with complete (except for Phil hubs) 1971 Record group
1987 50th Anniversary (DA)
1987 Prologue TT (not a paramount, but close...) Zipp Disk, DA
1991 Paramount OS mountain bike (never been ridden!)

The little lady's bikes -

1978 Trek TX930 (DA)
1986 Trek 770 (Super Record)
2003 Trek 5200 (Ultegra Triple)
2002 Cannondale Tandem (well, it was her idea...)

and an assortment of mountain bikes.

In the wings -

1954(?) Dunelt Fleur De Lis Road bike
1957 Hetchins Experto Crede
1984(?) Klein Road
1989 Gios Compact
1978 Colnago Super (needs chrome bad)

Wants -

That D**ned De Rosa!

See what can happen if you stay with this for a while? Our skis and boats are bad too...

I was like, WHAT!? It took me an extra second or so to get it. Good One!

I remember reading about the Viscount in Bicycling magazine (76? 77?) and I was fascinated with it. I always wanted to see or ride one in real life but never got a chance.

Neat collection.

Luker - HOLY COW! that IS a collection. You must have over 40 bikes. How do you store so many bikes? Are they lined up like in a bike shop or do you have one of those bike store, 2 level racks? Hanging? Truly Amazing! How did you get so many bikes? Seriously, thanks for sharing.

Bikes: IRO Angus; Casati Gold Line; Redline 925; '72 Schwinn Olympic Paramount

Some of us our too poor to ride like that. I have:
~1972 Schwinn Super Sport - "The Green Machine" - completely re-done to my likings (close to original)
~1970s? Astra Tour de France - "The fixie project"

And a mid 90s Mongoose hybrid (but I don't talk about her much)...

hi Lotek,

I spoke to Wim van der Kaaij this week! Very nice guy! Bought some Miche track cogs there. The little shop in Amsterdam has some amazing bikes, one of which was a very vintage looking track bike with a huge, it must have been 60 teeth chainring, very odd looking inverted fork and what must be a 24 inch front wheel! Some drooling took place that day, I can assure you.

A friend of mine recently moved to Amsterdam and when I went for a visit, we took the opportunity to check out some of those cute little bike shops. One of which was Aandewiel, ever heard of them? They used to build frames and had some interesting vintage ones hanging off the ceiling.

We also stopped by at one shop that sold Zieleman frames (probably the same shop that builds them) but a note on the door said they wouldn't be back for business until August 23rd. I took a peek in the window, but the frames they had were all very modern looking road frames, integrated headsets and all. Is that what you ordered? I can't imagine, because they looked anything but vintage.

Greets,

Ivo

Hallo Batavus,

The track bike with the reverse fork and HUGE front chainring is a
motorpacer, they followed motorcycles (at very close distance)

The Zieleman I have was bought off Marktplaats (don't tell anyone!)
and is a mid 70's model (from what I can tell). Ko Zieleman
retired in late 80's early 90s. I've seen one or two of those
horrible OS tubed, integrated headset Zielemans, Rest Assured
that is NOT what I'm waiting on.

Luker You've got a Trek 170? I've always lusted
after one of those. . how's it ride?

Marty

Motorpacer from 1938. thanks to A. Ross for the photo.

Acquired it recently from another forum member who had to move and didn't have room for it anymore. It needs to be cleaned and have some mior repais done - by which time, my son should have grown enough to ride it. (She's a tad (or 5) too large for me at 61cm)

I'm in the same class as you. Always looking for bikes to buy then do what work I can, and then sell them. I've never really come across something that fits just right. Besides my wife would kill me if I had that many bikes.

Poquemahone: You are definitely way overstocked with French bikes. You definitely need a (reasonable) Italian, just to have the experience of a splendid riding bike at last. Please give the size you want (+ a reasonable amount of money) and I will be glad to help!

crap, I keep coming across ones that fit, that's the problem... three of the four last nice ones I've found are my size...

I'll find an Italian cheap sooner or later, around here I can prolly find one for less than 50 bucks. I think that's less than shipping from Rotterdam. Thanks, tho! Besides, last time I rode with a couple guys on Italians, the Bridgestone blew 'em away... as to French overstock, well, I like old Frenchies.... prolly a sign of some mental disease or something, but I've got a backstock of decent french parts, so they're not a problem. But I'd still like that Italian, I'm just of a patient mindset one it right this moment. Something purty, tho, with nice lugs. And oh, yeah, since we're dreaming, I'd really, really, like a 1950s Stella.

Rotterdam, state of New York! Might be not that far from you. Anyway, you're slipping from reasonable to cheap ....

50 bucks is high for me. Maybe 100 tops right now . And yeah, I'm cheap, I think it comes from living here in the middle of a semi-large city with little bike culture... at least three bikes on my list were 5$. The majority of them were under 50$. All but three were sub 150$ or less. For a fun game, figure out which three. . One of 'ems obvious. The other two...

Bikes: Masi Team 3V, Diamond Back road bike that I built through trading massage with my wonderful messenger friends in Sea-town! I just tore it down to build my Masi. This bike served me well for the last 4 years!

I have an early '90's Masi Team 3V. I don't consider it a collection. I ride a 54, so if you ever want to sell your "everybody's dream find" Masi, let me know!

What I really need is CAMPY CAMPY CAMPY! I want to build up my Masi with all early 90's parts. It may take forever, but I have time to wait. I just bought an early 90's front derailleur...I'm on my way!

Wishlist so far:
Hetchins, Baylis, Colnago, Mondonico, Masi Gran Criterium, Vanilla...just to name a few

She's modest, but she's all mine

Bikes: Lemond Victoire, Cannondale.Mountain Bike, two 1980s lugged steel Treks, ancient 1980-something Giant mountain bike converted into a slick tired commuter with mustache handlebars, 1960-something Raleigh Sports

Well, by any standard my collection is miniscule. But I bought them both new and they both still get a fair amount of regular use. Come to think of it, I never thought of them as "Vintage" until I realized I was only one of three or four in the big charity rides with toe clips and down tube shifters.
