Let's Say A Guy Offers You A 7-11 Team Serotta...

...and said Serotta has the full 80's regalia...and was one of Davis Phinney's Team bikes to boot. The real deal, certified and verified. It's very, very cool....and he offers it to you after you miss out on one of his craigslist specials. You have a modest budget to replace a bike destroyed in a car accident. You want to get something racy, something nice.

What do you do?

or not.

This is the fruit of your karma Serendipper. I seriously doubt that you'll get offered one of Merckx's bikes if you turn it down.

p.s. - make sure the authentification is, er, well... what's the word? - authentic.

Is this by chance the Team 7-Eleven Murray Serotta that went on ebay a week or so ago. Do a search on completed items using the word Serotta and its still there. Went for $1500.

I suppose I would ask the price. Then, if I thought it was a good deal, I'd buy it.

Seems simple enough.

Well, that's the question isn't it? I'm thinking $1200-1500 mint w/ papers ~$600-900 good condition but no provenance.

My opening offer could break or seal the deal. Seller's bikes are a wool jersey photo gallery come to life. He doesn't need to sell. He got a bunch of the really nice ones from a charity bike sale, I believe it was the 2002 Lance Armstrong Foundation sale. A lot of top race guys give to that, and as you know, Davis is one of the biggest fundraisers as he has Parkinson's.

There is luckily an easy paper trail to follow to fully verify everything. I'll get to it when everything re-opens in the new year.

By the way, asking that question here on this forum is like standing outside a crack house with a sign saying "All crack 1/2 price"!

Hi all,

I believe I have a 7-11 team bike in my posession. I am looking to sell but have had quite a few questions on provenance. I emailed the serial # (83122) to Serotta a couple of years ago and they couldn't give me a lot of information except that is was circa 1985 and could have been built by Ben Serotta. The build quality is awesome and one local expert I showed it to (Greg Overton, here in Utah Valley) thinks it was probably at least a backup team bike. Have a look at the pictures. I would love it if some of you classic experts out there might have an opinion on the matter.

This bike is available for purchase to a good home.. Make me an offer.

Hey, a guy is allowed to second guess himself from time to time.

Hell, it's just hours into the new year and I resolve not to question my crazy wonderful adventure through this thing called life anymore.

I already had great correspondence with the seller. It's not my fault he's 6 feet tall, and the Serotta is the only bike he owns that will fit me!

I will update this thread as the wild ride progresses. I'm actually a bit anxious...

Yeah, I usually am quick to say that if you have to ask you already know the answer to your question. In this case dipper, I think that I will have to make an exception.

Yes, you are good to go for it. Good luck and keep us posted.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

Dipper,

2 of the bikes I absolutely crave are
Murray Serotta
Huffy Serotta

you have the chance to buy one with provenance (proven) to Davis Phinney?
Man I'd be all over that like white on rice.

Ken, every serotta built team bike I've seen had the "S" logo on the
brake bridge, and Serotta didn't use the card suites on the fork tangs.
interesting bike though.

But it does have a "Built for Murray by Serotta" sticker, and it has MURRAY on the brake bridge and it has a race number hanger brazed on... If it's not a 7-Eleven bike what the heck is it?

Could be a replacement fork - Quattro Assi?

Marty,

If for any reason I decide to change my mind, you will be the first in line to recieve the bike.

Update: Talked to seller. No more cold feet on his part He was/is very reluctant to sell--went on last week about memories, history, et. al. ad infinitum---He wants to do one more club ride with it. Then he will determine a price. Serotta has verification, and the provenance is...well, let's just say impressive, and accurate. Outlook is good...it has begun.
