Patterson Pass Road Race 4/5 45+ (2nd out of 21)
When we preroad the course it looked concerning; high winds on the descents and with my small frame (and being a terrible descender) I was 'concerned'. It also wasn't a climbers course; descenders had 10 miles to catch as the climbs were early in the laps.
On to the race. I wanted to feel out the course on the first lap (mainly to get a feel for the 1st descent). Luckily, no one took off on the first lap and was able to descend with the lead group. On the second lap I realized my only play was to bank time on the climbs and hope the pack doesn't catch me, so when another rider took off at the beginning of the Pass, I went with him and we traded pulls up that climb and the next (Flynn Rd). Unfortunately on the descent I cooked a corner and he got a gap and took off. I chased but couldn't get close than 5 seconds and he'd take off. I cruised in alone at second place.

Thanks guys! It sounds silly, but its nice having a better looking USAC results page....hopefully I'll add a first to that.
It was intimidating driving 6 hours up north to race. NCNCA probably has the biggest road race calendar in the US and an 'economy' of climbers; you can actually upgrade via that path which creates a talent pool. In SoCal we don't really have that (all the 'skinny guys' are talented across the board).
I may come up for Winters; Its really up to the wife. She's been travelling for work every week.

Masters Nats @ USAFA today. Junior took cell phone video of the group as he drove by. Anyone there?

Didn't know you were a track sprinter. How do you manage to be so good at that and still good on the road?

I love track sprinting but I don't have the genetics or the discipline. I just like to ride my bike too much.

That 'Like' is for the win not the for broken collarbone @topflightpro!
One of my long term goals is to race Nats; I know you just need to be a 3 and have a credit card but I'd like to go when I actually have a shot (even somewhat remote) to win. Not that I'm stealing a spot if i went; this sport's dying and they could probably use the cash influx!
45's still have some insanely talented dudes lining up though, same for 50's.

USAC should remember who its customers are. Anyway - USAFA is one of the nicest courses in the world to race. A 1986 UCI Road Race course.

I have an appointment next week with a shoulder specialist/surgeon. Given what I've read, I suspect the will want to do surgery to repair my clavicle.
In other news, I've gained about 10 pounds since Saturday despite not eating much. We're pretty much attributing it to all of the swelling.

Another A crit on the technical short course. I did a little bit better in terms of taking longer to get dropped and doing better in the corner. But ultimately I was dropped within about 8 minutes. I suck at cornering.

I raced what is most-likely my final TNR (Tuesday Night Racing) at the San Diego Velodrome last week. Season ends in October. I'll show up to volunteer (lap cards) or hang out but I want to take it easy. I was reluctant to race last week, but I won the final 12 km scratch race!
On my left - Wolfgang (Alex) Lochmiller - Current Junior National Champ (forget which events). On my right - Taylor Warren - Former Pro roadie, current cat 1 elite USA Crits racer
Wolfgang attacked on lap 1 as he does some times just to shake it up. Collective groans from the field (15 strong) were heard. I chased and caught up a couple laps, and we're trading 1/2 lap pulls, wondering how long this will last. Taylor bridges up and then it started to settle in that this could work, and that it would hurt starting this early...
The field got close a couple times, but eventually weaker riders started popping OTB of the field and the coordination was disrupted, and we were gone. Taylor took a couple full lap pulls which was greatly appreciated.
With about 10 laps to go we were closing in and were going to lap the field, when Taylor attacks us and goes straight through the field. There was no way I had this in the tank so I recovered on the back. Wolfgang hesitated a minute and then bridged up, but the two of them were not able to stay clear a second time. They burned quite a bit of matches trying to do that again and were understandably toasted for the final sprint, which I won outright, even though the riders I beat were racing for 4th.
Good times! I will now resume my off-season mode of commuting, maybe riding once on the weekend (or not), and doing some swimming, hiking and jogging.
