I just got back from spending a few days at Kentucky Horse Park, where my wife's cousin was competing in a National Eventing Championship. She competed in Dressage, Cross Country, and Stadium Jumping. Even at the amateur level, she has a lot of money invested in horse, truck and trailer, tack, etc. And the horses have to eat every day, whether you ride them or not. It makes a roadie having an expensive carbon fiber, electronic shifting wonder bike seem tame by comparison.

My Stepdaughter has been involved in Horses until quite recently. So as a newly acquired member of the family it was all new to me, sheesh the costs involved in acquiring a cheap horse, and they are a handful... and all cheap horses have issues, always physical and quite often emotional... i must admit they are interesting to be around and to get to know... my observation was that there are not really bad horses just bad owners .. as a pack animal they will do what the boss says unless the boss is a crappy boss then they will do whatever the heck they want to do, and you can inherit all kinds of problems from the previous bosses... how about a goldfish instead?

I suppose the same goes for all animals. While the horse above was "new" when we bought it, we've had various cats and dogs from local asylums, and it was often a challenge to get them to trust humans again. Sometimes we succeeded.

We took in 2 dogs. I don’t think they suffered from any crazy deliberate abuse as much as severe neglect.
Anyways, both seem extremely grateful to be a part of the family.
Horses don’t seem as gregarious towards people as dogs do, but if I knew the adopted horse as well as I know our adopted dogs, would I get the same impression? Like, wow this horse really enjoys being around me.
It could be they just don’t have the same opportunities to express it. Like obviously a horse isn’t going to flop itself next to your couch with it’s hooves in the air for a belly rub, or get in the car and ride shotgun to run errands, etc.
