I always thought typical length socks for cycling looked silly. Same with running. I haven't raced in years so I wear what I like.

Usually that's ankle high socks, just enough to protect the ankles from being skinned if I knock against the bike while riding, or kick my own ankles while running. Occasionally I'll wear below the ankle socks with my most comfortable shoes. With my Atreyu running shoes I don't wear socks at all. They aren't my favorite running shoes -- a bit wide for my narrow feet -- but they are the lightest and most comfy without any need for socks.

If I bother to wear longer socks, I go for knee height compression socks, mostly for cold weather or longer rides or runs to help with comfort. Same reason some marathon runners wear sleeves -- helps a bit with circulation so the arms and legs feel less heavy and sluggish after a couple of hours.

EDIT: Except that one time I got caught 8 miles from home in the heaviest rain it's ever been my distinct displeasure to experience.
I'm guessing they were cotton? That seems to soak up moisture, and I don't even use those for regular socks anymore. However, when I started to compare the materials in dress socks and cycling socks I realized that both types always had some combination of polyester, nylon, and spandex.

Swiftwick socks are great for cycling. No stupid looking tan lines for me.
