Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hit my max on a big downhill about 85 miles into my first century ride.

Well, according to Strava I've maxed out at 43 MPH, but I'm not sure I believe it because I didn't soil my britches on the way down.

I'm confident I've hit forty. Even though its cool, I have done the risk/benefit ratio and probably shouldn't do that too often.

There's a short (1.2 mile) but steep (6% average with stretches of 13% grade) and stright climb near my home that I use for hill repeats. I've been up and down this sgretch of road often enough to now it pretty well. So a week or so ago, I decided to see just how hard I could push it before scaring myself silly. Managed to hit 50+ m/h with the top tube clamped between my knees and a light grip on the hoods before discretion prevailed.

It was fun, but I doubt I'll try it again...

37 for me. I dont have hills in Houston so i try to hit as many overpasses as possible. This was over the ship Channel. Serious cross wind so that made it pretty...interesting.

38.8 mph, just last week.I had hit 38 on the same stretch last year and it being wooded with lot's of shadows I hit a pothole that really scared me. I'd only been road riding for a few months at the time. This time I couldn't remember where the pothole was so I held back and then it leveled out just past the pothole so likely could have broken 40 had I set myself up.

I hit 42 today. I could go faster, but there's a stop sign at the bottom of the hill.

Man some of you guys are nuts for going over 45mph!! I was fine at 41MPH no wiggles and I was still on the 2nd to the last rear gear but I was really careful because the road are asphalt and a little bumpy at times..just a little bummed that i did not make it to 2200 ft of elevation because there is a switch back there that i really really like when I did it last time..I switch to 105 compact from Sora triple and sometimes I miss that extra small gear in climbs but most of the time 105's is great for what I'm doing..just have to keep climbing right?..

After a certain point you cannot spin any faster and need gravity to assist you... since I am pretty light I have to pedal down some hills to keep up with bigger guys who may be coasting but could always get them back when the road turned up.

Body weight is an asset for descending (potential energy), but you pay the price climbing.

Recently (since I got back into biking after a 15+ year layoff), I hit 36.0 mph - of course that's on my fixed gear with a hair under 70 inches (46 x 16 with 650c wheels). Spun that sucker up to 173 rpm according to my Garmin.

42.4mph, I need to find bigger hills. So far the speed hasn't bothered me, we'll see what happens when I go faster.

Cunningham Road has a small curve just before it straightens and drops 80 feet in just a 500 foot distance. That's a 15-16% grade.

I've rolled up to the steep part going about 20 mph, see that's it's clear, and easily hit 43 mph by the bottom of the hill. That's about 10 seconds later. But on the bike, it seems like only a couple of seconds.

The top riders on Strava hammer the shallow downhill and so they are already going 40 mph at the top of the steep part. They hit 55 mph at the bottom.
