Effing shifter broke. That's what the problem was.

The same thing happened to me. check the way you've got tye cable clamped on the derailleur. there is a guide the the cable slips into on the back.

Kinda sounded like he tightened the cable down without having the shifter on the smallest cog. If that was the case he may have tightened it in excess to try and have it reach the large cog.
