Thoughts on bike sizing have changed over the years. In the 70s, it was not uncommon for folks to ride a bike they had to tilt a bit when stopped. If you had as much seat post showing as is common today, some would suggest the bike was a bit too small for you. I think the safety concerns are a bit overblown. If it's comfortable, ride it.
