Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't think this means what you think it means.
Actually - I think it means exactly what he thinks it means.

To the OP: I don't shave legs, but do trim (not shave) hair in the nether regions. Get an electric razor into those areas that pinch / pull / cause discomfort, and trim them to about 1/8th of an inch. Also - do this at least a week before any major rides or centuries. (Trimming to a short length avoids itching and pimpling.)

Made a huge difference for me - and not just on the bike.

My neighbor's sister's husband used to have his wife shave his butt hair.
It's funny that this topic even comes up as neighborhood chit chat.

PInching has never been an issue for me. But shaved legs just look better. I'm not a hairy guy especially so i just take it up to the point where my shorts will cover it. Dave Moulton had the best answer for the Why Shave question: tradition. Nuff said.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to explain things without getting weird.

Don't shave my legs. I trim the nether regions, but don't shave to avoid irritating ingrown hairs. Why? I was getting "hot spots" even with good shorts. Applied chamois cream, but that works much better without all the hair for it to cling to.

i like to think that hair actually can help. think about how airplanes and golf balls have weird nubs and dimples, called turbulators.

I've got a beard and thinning hair, so have used an electric trimmer for some time now. Basically I use an 1/8" or 1/4" guard on everything...the beard gets trimmed every week, and then the rest of the bod gets it every two weeks. Chest, legs, arms, pits, groin...works great. Short enough that the bandaids won't pull hair. I just got some road rash on my arms and shins, no problems. Much better than shaving, as you never get nicks, ingrown hairs, or itching as it grows out to stubble, and you don't have to buy razors all the time.
Bonus: less hair traps less sweat so stink factor is lower. Handy for commuters.

I prefer trimming over shaving because of ingrown hairs.

I'm pretty sure those are rivets unless you're seeing something I'm not.

look in the middle of the wing. you'll see little triangle nubs (these are the turbulators) sticking out the whole length of the wing.

here's a more obvious example:

supposedly they help in controlling/handling of the airplane.

Try searching "shaved legs" on Google and you will be amazed to see that a high percentage of the images are of guys... and I found a picture of Chip before his weekly NAIR bath.

Be careful with the nether region. Cutting them short can create a further problem. God made'em curley so they don't poke your eye.

Stick with the legs.

But you'd have to ride with your Turbulators hanging out for any benefit.

Dang, another picture in my head I wish wasn't.
