Phones work fine for long rides too if you budget power conservatively by not rolling with continuous GPS. Loaded offline maps work perfectly fine for location information and at the end of the day if you require an exact location, do a GPS spot check. Phone maps are so much easier to read on a phone than some of the other high dollar gee-gaws available. I prefer to use my high dollar phone's gee-gaws conservatively while enjoying the views the ride provides.
