Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The skin cancer I have is not related to diet or the reactive chemicals caused by the absorbtion of sun screen. Basal Cell Carcinoma is caused by sun damage from UV rays, as is the Actinic Keratosis (can develop into squamous cell carinoma) and sunburn.

You might actually get some vitamin D and a nice sun tan?

Agree, I've read a few studies (can't cite any now but I'll look) that have connected the introduction of sunscreen with an increased rate of skin cancer. Prime reason is that itprevents burning rays, but doesnt stop all the UV, So people tend to stay out in the sun a lot longer than they would without it.

What always gets me is people who will proselytize sunblock and tanning salons, Salons use lights that reproduce the exact same tanning rays present in natural sunlight, but at a higher level.

Seriously though: sun exposure, possibly chronic dehydration, stress, poor diet (and yes, I do cook my food..) - all will contribute to aging of the skin.

Why use sunblock? Well, maybe because a few thousand years ago, we weren't so actively depleting our ozone layer, to the point where sun exposure is far more harmful today...

Ken.

It's not even that. UV-A rays cause the surface damage and burns, along with the tans. Most sunblocks prevent this, but do little for UV-B rays. These cause the deeper cell damage and cause wrinkles, age-spots, other skin damage, Actinic Keratosis (pre-cancer), Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma because of the UV light's damage to the DNA. UV-C is mostly blocked by the atmosphere.

Where taning spas have it wrong is that they are producing more UVB than UVA.
