If you want to maybe sleep with the guy, tip him.
I find a good six pack goes a long way for face recognition. That, and bringing your future dollars to him.
You definately gave the guy a pretty bit of profit with the purchase alone. Look him right in the eye and say how much you appreiciate his service. It'll go a long way.

Tip. Don't tip. Societal norms. Hard working moms and students. Gotta earn it. My coffee needed more warm-ups.

Tipping is a societal norm
Tipping down here is just not done. No one tips, it's not part of our culture. Although I have heard from people that have been to the US, and they find the whole tipping thing surreal. Especially with the added taxes on top of the listed price.
We have an award system here so virtually everyone gets an award wage. Waiters get about $15.00p/hour.
We also have a GST (goods and services tax 10%) but it is included in the list price. So if you buy a product that is listed as $5, that's all you pay, no tipping, no extra taxes.
CHEERS.

Lat year I had a custom MTB built. The owner made a nice profit and I felt no need to tip him. What I did do though was give the head wrench $30 and asked him to take whoever worked on the bike out for a few beers on me. Ever since whenever I walk into that shop I get treated like gold.

I'd just like to point out something--Davet, youre NOT paying extra to the waiter/waitress. Essentially, by being legally allowed to pay the help less than minimum wage, restaurants are legally being allowed to steal from their employees to make it look as if your meal is less expensive. If you don't want to tip, I suggest you write your congress people and vociferously demand that our government make the minimum wage apply to ALL workers, rather than personally stealing part of someone's entitled wage because you can. If you succeed, then you can feel perfectly justified in not tipping, though your meal will definitely cost you more.
On topic, according to Miss Manners book of etiquette, even if it is a tipping situation, you NEVER tip the owner of the shop. (Though in this day and age of America, it's hard to imagine anyone being insulted by an offer of money.)
Cookies and beer aren't a tip, they're a gift, and you can give those to anyone you like.

Inkwolf: Minimum wage is a state by state issue. Congress sets the floor base. In Washington state, where I live, we are blessed with forward-looking legislators. We have, by law, a balanced budget, no income tax and a state minimum wage that applies to everyone including restaurant workers.
A tip is a gift, I believe, and I can give or not give as I see fit.

If restaurant workers in your state DO make the minimum wage WITHOUT tips being counted as part of it, then tips are indeed optional. Good for your state!
Maybe I should agitate for some changes here in WI....

I only tip cute females...and only because they're cute. Even if they give bad service and they're cute, I'll still tip them.

Davet, one of the national trainers for the restaraunt the Mrs. works at is from Seattle. She was aghast at the wages paid in Texas... and YES the cost of living is the same. The Mrs. last check with 82 hours on it including 2 hours of OT was $62.00 and she claims 4 dependents. The servers that are single or don't have kids more often than not get "THIS IS NOT A CHECK" checks. Nice setup Texas has NOT.

Dougmt: As you may know, the Washington State minimum wage is $7.01 and covers virtually everyone with very few exceptions. There are no 'tip credit' wages for food service workers, therefore they are subject to our minimum wage.
Some states are absolutely horrible in what they allow food service workers to be paid. In my opinion, it's borderline criminal.

ALL states have a minimum wage. Some are higher than Federal minimum, some are the same and surprisingly some are lower .

The states on the map in yellow do NOT have a state Minimum Wage Law. ALso, check the table just below the map. It shows Alabama with
"No minimumn wage."
Some others:
Arizona
Louisiana
Tennessee
Florida
etc.

no way. he's doing his job- making you a lifetime customer with good service. don't bother with a tip- just continue to give them your business.
