Too soon! Too soon!

Being a rider that subjected sit bones and butt tissue to years of riding small and narrow Concor Supercorsa saddles, and spending years in college sitting on hard, cold, cushion-less, steel Mayline stools while drafting and drawing in the School of Architecture, I can pretty much ride a bike with a saddle made out of granite for miles without any problems..... "a soft, "comfortable" saddle actually feels weird to me.

Sit bones sink in and the rest of the padding pushes up on the taint... bad combination for anything more than a mile or so.
+1. There's no substitute for miles in the saddle.

Not sure I should admit to it here, but I actually like the old wool shorts with real chamois leather. I only use them for events like the Retroronde or L'Eroica, but I like 'em better than any of the modern padded stuff.

Oh, and a well-worn Brooks Pro of course, combined with a French fit.

Picture of what COMFY looks like:

More weight on the pedals. The saddle will soon be forgotten.

My longest ride recently was 100 miles on a saddle that's too wide for me (Brooks Champion Flyer), so I'm not especially picky.

I'm always surprised when I hop on a modern Unicanitor saddle (HARD! PLASTIC!) how unusable and unreasonable it seems in the first three minutes or so. Then after five or six minutes, I completely forget it's there. I don't think I've ever ridden more than 60 miles on one, though, so maybe I should try and push that.

I'm basically a 200-miles-a-month kinda guy, so it's not like I'm some crazy hardcore ironbutt.

Brooks Pro on most of my daily riders, though. Every time I ride a B17, I think, "Okay, that's just too wide." Coming soon in the FS subforum, a couple B17s and a Champion Flyer

Still looking for the right shorts ... Serfas MTB liner is good, but Serfas no longer markets shorts.

Y'know, every so often I notice that the B17 on my fixed-gear is too wide, but I think that I'm out of the saddle often enough to avoid chafing. One saving grace of too-wide saddles is that they usually don't put too much pressure on the perineum.

Commuting (13 mi each way) or rides of less than 30 miles - just regular briefs and hiking shorts.
Rides of longer than 30 miles - seamless wicking underwear, spandex cycling shorts w/chamois, hiking shorts over.
Cool/wet weather -- seamless underwear, cycling tights w/chamois, hiking shorts.

All are on Brooks B17-clone Fujita Belt saddles. My 'go-to' S-10S also has a 25-yr-old Nashbar suspension seatpost that utilizes a 1"diameter 1"tall elastomer puck that takes out a bunch of the road shocks/vibration.
