I just don't get it!
That metal thing on the straps of toe cage pedals that keeps the strap tight, is a clip. Therefore, the cleat and clamp style don't have clips and straps. Google "strap clip" and you'll come across little metal parts exactly like what is used in old toe cages.

On second thought, I guess saying "much better term" is probably inaccurate. How about "a more appropriate term?"

"Locked-in" came to me after while having them my first week, and always being used to platforms, I coasted up to an organized rest stop and temporarily forgot that I wasn't still on platforms.

I still cringe when I think about it. LOL

Doesn't get around the issue. I used to have a pair of cleated shoes for use with toe clips and straps. You needed to plan ahead for your stops unless you were a lot more adept than I am at track standing.

Why do we bake cookies but cook bacon? Why are they called "apartments" when they're all together? Shouldn't they be called "togetherments?"

Why are items transported by land called a "Shipment" but transportation by sea called "Cargo"?

Why is it a pair of panties, but only one bra?

For that matter, "toe clips" weren't clips. They were the cages that went with the straps. So this problem started a long time ago!

Toe cages are clips--it's a pretty broad term. For example, look at the use of the term for firearms parts.

They don't seem that much like cages to me. Clip works.

Okay, now you know why they're called clipless, but do you know what the best chain lube is?

For that matter, why do we call cell phones "phones"? They are, in fact, radios that send a signal to a repeater. A telephone sends a signal down a wire or some other physical object instead of sending signals by radio waves.

Why do some people call a television remote a "clicker"? TV remotes haven't "clicked" for 30 years and even when they did very few people used one.

More bicycle centric: Why do cranks have "chainwheels" and cassettes have "cogs" and derailer "pulleys" aren't (pulleys)? For that matter why do we insist on calling them "derailleurs" when that isn't even the French word for what they do?

"Clipless" pedals are just like those examples where something that was once used fell out of fashion and was replaced by something else. Yes, we could have called them "clip-in pedals" or "pedal bindings" (like ski bindings which is another name left over from long ago) but the former would have been confusing and the latter would have been too scary...see Cinelli M71 pedals, aka "death pedals".
Sorry to derail the thread but this part in Sheldon's article really bugs me about the French language from France...

In an attempt to combat "cultural imperialism", or "franglais" the Ministry has been attempting to banish such terms as "le week-end", "Walkman" (which they mistakenly think is English), "FAX", "Computer", etc. and replace them with special made-up French words. ("fin-de-semaine", "baladeur", "telecopieur" (SIC), "ordinateur"...)

All the word there are what's being used here in Québec. One word that really bugs me is the French from France equivalent of email, which is 'mail'. In Quebec, we use the combination of the words Courrier Électronique (electronic mail) to form the word courriel, which in my opinion, is much better than... mail, yuck. Spam is pourriel which comes from 'pourrie' which means rotten.

Sorry for the derail* /rant off
