I've done it, but it's been several years.

What I remember most is mountain biking downhill with rim brakes. The heat from the brakes would melt the snow which would refreeze and ice the rim. Once that happened only way to slow yourself down was to steer into the deeper snow at the edge of the trail.

I ride my cross bike with 32mm studded tires sometimes. It works great on hard pack, ice, icy pavement, glazed pavement. But is very dicey if there's any loose snow at all.

So it's best use is shoulder seasons when there is pretty much bare or maybe glazed pavement with the occasional black ice or icy patches that would be deadly on regular road bike tires. The studs work very well then. I also ride it in the spring on roads or trails that have a very solid hard pack.

I'm thinking very hard about getting a fat tire bike for snow riding since this winter a physical ailment will be making XC skiing more difficult for me, but biking seems to be OK.

Here is my snowbike that will get me through the storms this winter. It's a '91ish Specialized Hardrock. Just mounted a fresh set of 26x2.10 Kenda Darts with super gnarly tread knobs. It still needs an upgrade on rapid fire type shifters and mounting the lights for the dark, snowy rides.

This thing is a moose.

No snow riding last year, but in prior years;

Schwalbe Marathon Winter was my winter tire, now it's a non-studded 700x45 knobby.

I put the Marathon WInters on in December and take them off in March. One great thing about being a winter cyclist is not worrying about being stuck at work. Another is not having to shovel the driveway before going to work. The best, though is riding home in the snow, either with a full moon or with flakes dancing in the headlight, looking forward to a laphroaig by the fireplace.

I had to use this model on the rear since the frame lacked eyelets near the axle;

I live near the "tip of the mitt" in lower Michigan. We get hammered with heavy snows off the big lake that makes riding adventurous. My rides are according to my work schedule and try to get 2-3 5 or 7mi rides in on our smalltown streets at night.

There is a surreal feeling to riding in a snowfall with tunes playing and snow in the headlight beam.
Get a fatbike and stud the tires. Best thing ever for riding on snow and ice. And it's a blast.

Nah. I'll let others enjoy them. To me, they are too bulky for my riding style. Though we get 10-12ft of snow over the winter the streets are plowed and sometimes the little bike path.

Currently, we are under storm warnings for high winds and 3-6". Yesterday it was 70deg. Here we go....

My local Trek store sponsors a Saturday morning ride with a free post-ride breakfast. I wimped out this morning, however. Not because of the temperature (about 32 F) but because of the 40 mph wind that I would have had to ride into along the highway for about 6 miles to get to the store. Last winter I rode on 29 x 2.1 tires, which came with my bike. I gave up with 5 inches of fresh snow on trails as too much for me, as well as more than about 3 inches of frozen and rutted trails. I plan on putting the new Surly Extraterrestrial 29 x 2.5 on my front, which is due out this month. I hope that will work better after heavier snows.

Just got back from a stormy ride. We have heavy snowfall with wind gusting 50+mph. After dark I grabbed the bike and rode off into a blizzard bliss.

After getting more than a foot of snow and the additional 3-4" almost daily, it's time to commit to the groove. Here we go....

I ride the same bike all year - Workcycles Opafiets. I'll usually put Marathon Winters on for the winter though a few years I've been able to skip it. The city and county (in MN) are getting better and better with snow clearing. Haven't used studded tyres in NL for several years.

We have extra bikes (Omafiets) for guests to ride so if I don't think I'll need the studs then I'll grab one of those (it's quite normal for guys to ride step-thru's in Europe so it's not an issue for me when I'm in the US either).
