Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Did you copy and paste it? You're supposed to type it in. Diamondback uses the same code and it worked for me just a few days ago. DB has some good deals, too. I like the Haanjo.

Typed it as instructed but no luck. And copy/paste didn't work neither.

Try this one. Matter of fact, I think it's actually the one I used for DB.

Thx but...still no luck. Universe must not want me to prioritize a new gravel bike over this eclipse-y thing or something something.

Meanwhile I'm trying to assess this Craigslist deal (can't post link b/c I'm a newbie): 2017 Raleigh Willard 2 offered by original owner who bought it through Raleigh Corp site earlier this year, less than 300 miles on it, no crashes/damage besides paint chips on right side of fork. Stock setup: SRAM Rival 1x, 11-42 cassette w/38t, Tektro Spyre disk brakes, aluminum frame, 40c tires (tubeless ready). Asking $900.

Thoughts (besides go test ride it, which of course I will)?

The Williard 2 is $850 delivered to you on the corporate site and has all sizes currently available, so...

I sensed that this might be the case, hence my repeated attempts to enter the code. If someone else would be willing to confirm that a code works and let me know I would sure appreciate it!

I just went to raleighusa.com/partner and set up a corporate account with CYCLE4TAW and it worked.

The Willard 2 fits 650x47B tires!

If you're so inclined, you can put a 650B wheelset in that bike and run the new 47mm WTB tires:

Assuming that's your bike...do you ride gravel? Do you love the bike (and would recommend it)?

Yes, that's my bike, I just got it a few days ago.

I ride mixed surfaces. We have a few gravel roads and a lot of other stuff that's not paved - bike trails, hiking trails, cut-throughs, etc. I have several 650B converted road bikes, I wanted something a little more "adventurous", and I wanted to try a 1x drivetrain, so this Raleigh Willard 2 with the 650x47B WTB Byways is it.

For my medium sized frame I think the stock 700C 40mm wheel setup is kind of big, but the 650x47B config is great for gravel. I had a set of 650x42mm Panaracer Gravel King tires on it for a shake-down ride, and it felt faster with those slick tires, but the Byways have more floatation and sidewall bite on loose gravel. If I was going to alternate between wheels, I'd probably run a set of 700 32 tires on the stock wheelset for faster paved rides.

I very much like this bike. The frameset is very good quality, and they wisely kept it all standard with a BSA bottom bracket, a round 27.2 seat post, 15x100 & 12x142 thru axles, post mount brakes, etc. There's nothing proprietary, expensive, or otherwise weird, so it's easy to mod. The Sram Apex1 drivetrain is great, the TRP Spyre brakes are simple and work reasonably well. I swapped the saddle, seat post, and stem to suit my preferences. It's very easy to go to 650B with a set of factory built 15x100 12x142 mtb wheels. Even after adding in the price of 650B wheels and tires, I doubt you'd find a better deal for new 650B gravel bike like this.

Yes, I would certainly recommend this bike at the discounted price on the Raleigh site. It's a good deal as it comes, and the potential to run big 650B tires made it a no-brainer for me.

Here's a full photo album with more pics:

Thanks so much for the scoop--I have never read about 700x40 vs. 650Bx42--very interesting stuff on Guitar Ted's Riding Gravel site based here in IA. Sounds like your 650's sorta float along and provide support/stability which is important to me. I've been riding my Framed Wolftrax fatty 2x w/4" wide tires on gravel the past two seasons and I love the stability but wonder what a lighter bike would feel like on longer gravel rides.

Still doing my due diligence on finding the right bike . . .

I've test-ridden a half-dozen bikes from stock and custom-build Salsa, Soma, All-City, Surly, and Jamis -- from friends and shops. I got into a few discussions at local shops about doing a custom-build for me -- what I really want is a steel road bike on 700x32s. Black Mountain Road is just about perfect.

But for new bikes, it seems almost impossible to beat Raleigh's offerings on spec and price. The Tamland is SO close to the geometries that fit me well at maybe 2/3 the price (even if I could swapping tires and upgrading the cockpit to what I like). Only two things stop me: 1) I've committed to selling my CAADX before I add a new bike and 2) the knowledge that Raleigh was selling Tamland 1 for $799 just a few months ago.

Certainly if item 2 happened again, I would forget about item 1.

Thanks for all of the comments on this thread. Very helpful.
