out walking the earth
The idea that things are one or the other is a fallacy. If you don't look at all the available data (feel is data) your approach is apt to be misguided. There are days were my inability to hit my power targets is indicative of fatigue, inadequate rest, poor diet choices, or any host of other issues meaning I should pull the plug. The feel is off, the numbers aren't being met. There are days like ancker describes where you chase the numbers because you can and should hit them. There are days where everything is clicking and barriers are smashed. That one would limit data input that is actually available to them is confusing.

does anyone know is r8000 chainrings will work with a 6800 crank? the bolt pattern looks the same but apparently the chainlink is slightly different on the r8000 crank?

I know for the 9100 DA stuff the chain-rings and front derailleur changed, and are not backwards compatible. I believe the same is true for r8000.
They made some changes to the chainring spacing/thickness that supposedly improve shifting but also meant breaking backwards compatibility.

On racing tech......
Will I be considered a ****** or is it bad to show up to low level racing in a skinsuit? I bought one because I'm time trialing this year and it is pretty much the only form fitting kit I have. I've lost some weight and the normal old jerseys have some flap to them now. I could go out and buy a jersey on Amazon prime or locally since the race is soon.
I have a team kit of the team our corporation sponsors, but that's a non-starter right there. That's in the closet for company sponsored fundraiser rides and such.

You'll be fine.
There are frequently guys who show up on $10k bikes and full pro-team kits. At one point in time, USAC officials enforced rules about kits and team membership, but now, it's mostly ignored, especially at Cat 5 events.

Surprises me about the team membership/kit thing. I personally will wear it on training rides to rep the company, but never would in a race. Once you're in the races, there's rules and fees involved and stuff. It's not riding the greenway with your buddies. It just feels respectful at the race to keep the team kit home.
Especially with teams that may have riders in all sorts of levels of racing. Never know, one might show up at a race as P/1/2 that you're a 5 at......and uh oh.

Thanks @topflightpro ;. Skinsuit it is. Probably couldn't even tell anyway until up close and you see the thumb loops.

Many teams have racers from juniors to masters and 5s to 1s. They all have the same kit. That's not a thing.
Wearing the kit of a team you're not on (or especially a pro kit) is kinda a thing, but no one pays much attention to the 5s anyway. Though last year I went to a bigger regional race and saw a guy from afar decked out in a BMC kit with the bike and everything and thought it was Brent Bookwalter or Joey what's his name... it was a hairy-legged cat 5 dude. Hmmm.
Anyway, for training I wear whatever is clean. No one's going to buy something because it was on a jersey I was wearing way out in the middle of podunk nowhere.

I moved this from the training status thread. The more I get into it it is a technical thing.
I'm just sharing a piece of data I have never seen and curious about thoughts. Nothing conclusive here, but I am making some guesses based on other history I have.
What % of energy/effort goes into powering the bike (vs everything else) in a race or TT (I expect they are different)?
Postulate:<75%. In this case the numbers are 50% but I think track standing takes more focus than riding. The core, brain, all else is using a lot of energy, effort.
Would having more BPM available by reducing this effort make the rider go faster?
Postulate: For this rider, no, for short distance as he is not HR limited (see rowing). For longer, RR, yes as effort and fatigue add up.
Finding ways to relax on the bike and get HR down might make a longer race go better. Maybe not. Thoughts?
Data for this rider.
Max HR - 206
-AT (seen for 30 min) HR - 190-197 depending on weather, altitude, rest. This does not correlate linearly with power.
-Rowing data had 205BPM held for 5+ min and the event was over.
No idea how long this could have been and too hard/painful to re-test. Other events were lower as boat balancing/position meant backing off a bit (fascinating stuff).
-Highest cycling HR is 206BPM for about 10 sec due to bringing in upper body - sprint/finish.
-Bed resting awake HR ~ 50BPM, walking around about 70, Crit start line about 90
So it takes 50-70 beats over resting HR to balance your bike, be awake and alert and produce no power. I expect with bicycle at speed, the balance effort is less, but hard to isolate anything really.
70BPM more ~193 is AT for this rider.
This rider, doing no cycling power to the pedals (I know there was actual force->work->power) consumes half the HR band from rest to aerobic threshold. ~50@rest~193@AT (206 max).
What made it go down at 30 I don't know and I expect the end 154 was a no-hand on bars effort.
I also saw repeatable increase HR (very small) with higher profile wheels at the same power (55% power as a TT).

I tend to not really trust companies when they say "It isn't compatible". Sort of like how Campy and Shimano/SRAM cassettes are "technically not compatible" but are interchangeable in practice.

No.
I looks (I did not try) like DA 9100 and Ultegra (new stuff) may be interchangeable, but certainly not the rings on my Ultegra I got in Sept 2017 and what I received this week.
The one arm by the crank angles up and the ring angles too, just like DA 9100. Likely you could cut/grind the older Ultegra 4 arm rings to fit, but as they are hollow (the DA are) - I wouldn't.

The chain-ring thickness changed slightly on the latest 91xx and 8xxx, and the chain line is slightly different so the front chain-rings/crank/derailleur are not backwards compatible with 90xx and 6xxx.
(To be clear, you can have a 91xx/8xxx crank/chain-ring/FD with the rest of your system being old, but those three components need to match up)

Pretty excited for it! I'm for sure going to discs on my next bike, and I've been waiting for a cannondale aero bike for yearrrrs. My first bike that I bought as an adult was a caad10. It's been through hell and back but I'm still racing it to this day. That bike got me my first bike shop job and I ride and race on all cannondales still. Just finished building up my Scalpel today. it's good to maintain a relationship with a LBS even if they're a thousand miles away. You never know waht deals you'll get tossed your way!

out of curiosity.... why are you so excited for disc for a TT bike?
cannondale's had an aero bike for a while. was the fact that it was not disc what kept you away?

My TT bike (this one and the previous that I had and sold) is a slice. It's aero, but not suitable for road racing. The super slice is an interesting move, but I'm not buying the idea of discs for TT / TRI yet.
Excited for the scalpel-si. Now if this snow will melt so I can go outside and ride it!

Not going disc for TT bike. I think that's dumb. I'm talking road bike. They haven't had an aero road bike until now. They're top model has been the Supersix which falls under the "standard" bike, in my opinion. And they put discs on it 2(?) years ago, but made some design decisions I didn't agree with.

I just looked at the back of the bike and thought it was a TT bike; now I see the drop bars. Oops.
Sorry!
Scalpel-Si is even better than the older one, which was really great....esp if you got a lighter model. The fork is really fantastic. I'm not such a huge fan of the offset setup.
FWIW, I have 2 Hollowgram SRM cranks/power meters I will eventually get around to selling (1x). Not sure you can use a regular crank on the Si frames, though.
Oddly, given convoluted cable routings, disc for TT has *that* going for it (no binding). For me the disadvantages outweigh the advantages... for *my* purposes.

Maybe. Gonna ride it first then decide how much mtb racing I want to do this season.

yep. Deal being, the mechanic I'm friends with sold the frame to a customer. He took it out, cracked the rear triangle and brought it back. the mechanic bought it back and got the rear triangle repaired. Looks nigh on flawless and I trust Calfee's work. It's got a monarch RL rear and a fox 32 with the GRIP damper on the front. I liked the left i'd ridden, but this fork is damn light as well and feels good riding around the halls of my apt building (lol). Eventually I'll get some race wheels for it and fast tires.
the Lefty is definitely the better fork (it's light, but that single stanchion is beefy and doesn't flex). the 32 SC is an OK trail fork (esp if the rider is very light), but two stanchions -- and thinner stanchions -- always flex more. it's also really smooth/supple with small bumps.
Lefty's downside is needing the special front hub/wheel.
i like the fox fit4 damper; can't comment on the grip.

Where is the license waiver?
The one for the license, not for the race.
Anyone got link?
