New member here, hopefully not rehashing what has been discussed. I am having trouble identifying Trek's new FX lineup, in particular the FX 3 and FX 4. Is this intended to replace the 7.3 and the 7.4? Or is this a completely new lineup?


I am contemplating the FX 3 and it seems closest to the 7.4 (but I believe Trek is getting ready to release the 2017 7.4, so they may not be comparable).


The price difference is minimal. Is there a reason to upgrade to the 7.4? I think it might be worth it for the Deore, but I'm a novice.

We are a new member (pair) here from SE Wisconsin (Trek Country). We’re both in our 6th decade of life and with our 3 boys grown and out of the house, and reasonably well established in their lives (4 Grandsons) , we decided to add back an element of recreation that we used to enjoy, long before the kids came along with all their seemingly endless scheduled activities. We’ve had bikes in the past, still have some of them in the basement, but my old 1981 Trek Road bike seems to have grown too big for me now.
We have been working with a local bike dealer to get a couple of recreational bikes for my wife and I. Strictly riding on paved over old rail bed or maybe some light cinder or gravel occasionally, as well as on suburban streets. After riding a lot of bikes on test rides (FX 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.7), we finally decided on the FX 7.4’s for each of us. It seems to be the sweet spot in the lineup as far as I can tell, and that way I only have to learn how to service one set of components.
We picked them up late last week and have been getting them set up with a few accessories over the weekend, and getting used to using some muscles that have long been idle. Pictures to follow if I can figure out how to get them uploaded.

the other great thing about Trek FX series bikes ... they retain their resale value. posted Wifey's 7.3 15" frame on CL Sunday night around midnight & only 22 hrs later I had a fistful of cash in my hand ...

I just wanted to share this insane 7.9 fx with you guys. i just came across it and it's seriously over the top! ~$2500 bike with ~$2500 wheels, and ultegra drive train!

Listed as being in good condition for 370? It's the right size for me as I can't find anything in a 15" used. I was looking for a 7.2 or 7.3, but figure is this really is in good shape better than paying for an 7.2 used...

Yes and no lol I too am confused about the 2017 FX models! They have restructured the naming on them, and in a weird way too! The FX3 is actually the new 7.4 and the FX 4 is the new 7.5 with Tiagra! As if all the different numbers and names aren't already confusing enough lol I am considering a new hybrid myself and would have already purchased the new FX3 I test rode at my LBS if it wasn't for the terribly lame cosmetics of the FX line! They are extremely disappointing!.. and my LBS only had the viper red available so I walked away and looking into the Sirrus Elite or Cannondales beautiful Quick Speed line

I agree, I did not like it at all when I saw it on line, but in person, out in the bright light, it is really nice!

So, I finally narrowed down to a Fx 7.4 WSD 17" today and alas, they are sold out everywhere in the tri-state area. I can find a 7.3 for $575, or do I get the Fx 3, which is at the very top of my budget at 699. Is it really worth the 125 more? I didn't test out a 7.3, but I LOVED the 7.4 and even for a novice could tell the difference between the 7.2 and the 7.4 (didn't try the 7.3 because we though they had the 7.4 and is was less than the 7.3).

Sorry so long. Want to purchase tomorrow, so please help out!

In a year the $125 will be forgotten but you'll still have the bike so get the one you LOVE.

The new FX 3(not to be confused with the 7.3FX) replaces the 7.4FX.


If you can, I would get the 7.4FX if only because it is 1lb lighter than the FX 3.


Now as to a choice between the 7.4FX/FX3 and the 7.3FX, as sail stated, you will soon forget the extra cost, but have the better bike for the years ahead.

Another vote for the 7.4. If you use the bike semi frequently, you will thank yourself for spending the extra $ in the long run.

Great! Thanks all for the feedback. I guess it's best to go with the FX 3, as I can't find the 7.4 in a WSD 17" in the 30 LBS I called today. But that is what I really do want!!

Moving on though, I did find a place that would give me $50 off to match the 7.4 price but its a 40 min drive. The shop close to home is the MSRP of 700, but I do get lifetime "tuneups only." As a Newbie, is that worth the $50? Thanks!!!! How often are tuneups worth it?

I didn't pay full price on any of the 4 FX's I've owned and didn't pay taxes on a couple of them. Try to haggle down the price (cash is king) at the bike shop closest to you. The tune ups are not so frequent but they cost $30, + or - $10 (depends on your area). Minor adjustments to your shifters and drive train are usually for gratis at reputable shops.

The combo of being closer to home and the lifetime "tune ups" are probably worth it, because for one, you will need to take you bike back after a month or so, for all the cables to be re-tightened, as is normal when one buys a new bike.


Now whilst this re-tightening should be free of charge, it would be pretty irksome having to drive 40mins with your bike just for that, as well as any possible servicing you may want done in the years ahead.

I agree.
If it makes you feel better I paid $700 a year ago for my 7.4 with one free check from a shop I don't like, but thats the bike I wanted and I do my own work. Maybe they'll toss in a water bottle holder, these guys wouldn't even do that.

If you're even slightly mechanically inclined, those tune ups are worthless. Adjusting cable stretch is literally turning a knob a turn or two. Any real fix will not be covered by this tune up. A discount on future merchandise, like seats, grips, and pedals will be more useful IMO
