Take aluminum can, smash flat, and keep in your bar bag. Put the can down on the ground, bottom up and stick the kickstand on the can when you have to park on soft ground. Fancier is a quad box cover, the type that are dished, tie a string on it with a loop on the opposite end to put on your bars. This way you can just pick it up by the string without having to bend over :-) Motorcycle trick.

Bontrager needs to come out with a $249 carbon fiber kickstand support plate with a titanium option.

No problems with my chainstay kickstand. It's light (aluminum), doesn't interfere (long chainstays), stable (IGH+dynohub keep CoG low). I use it a lot for commuting. OTOH, no kickstands on my road bikes.

I visited one of the local shops (local meaning the one 30 miles to the south, they are all 30 miles away and I consider 50 mile radius to be local, lol) to see what brands he sells as I'll be in the market sometime for a "fitness" hybrid bike. I'll be all over western PA to see all the various brands. He sells Giant and had one 2012 Escape, two women's 2013 Escapes, and 2 men's 2013 Escapes. All of them had kickstands as did I believe the various Giant Roams he had left on the floor.

All it takes to get a dinged up bike is a moron, with or without a kickstand. And the moron isn't necessarily the owner.

Have used these for years with my motorcycles. Never had to use one with a bicycle though.

Don't want the hassles previous posters have mentioned and I don't trust them to hold up the bike. It's like clipless pedals, a lot of clipless users have a first fall when starting out story. A lot of kickstand users have a my bike fell over story. I prefer to lean my bike on something or just set it on the ground.

My money's on kickstands resulting in more dented bikes than not having a kickstand

Just ride, keep it simple. No need to stick every doodad available on your bike.

I know, right!? I keep reading on this forum that if you have kickstands, "dork discs," front crank chain guards, or wheel reflectors that you are obviously a stupid newb that doesn't deserve to own a bike and breathe the same air as "real" cyclists. I think people have gotten obsessed with an ideal that they saw in a magazine....

Rob B..
Current cycling mindset is it's all about fast and light, whether or not you are either. Kickstands aren't light and don't make you faster.

I use them on my touring bikes and all arounders, they are wonderful. The double leggers I use on the touring rigs are like having a repair stand built into the bike, who could ask for more.

I have a kickstand but I removed it for about a week...got so sick of not being able to park my bike anywhere(nothing to lean it on) that I reinstalled it.

Add the lawyer tabs, valve cap and the little nut on the valve. Those do add weight

This thread is nuts! Especially in this forum....funny cause I never new bikes didn't come with kickstands until I received my Kona almost 2 yrs ago....My 87 World sport road bike even came with one when I bought it back then. I do think they should at least provide a place to put one if one desires to have it.

All kickstands are good for is tearing up bikes. The bikes are always falling over and the kickstand clamp crushes the tubing and ruins the bike and it's value. Nobody uses a kickstand on a good bike. Lay it over or lean it against something.

Please, define "good bike." I'm sure your bike looks real cool leaned up against a wall or a sign post.
