Woe is me!

Started cleaning up my new to me Sirrus as it's covered in sawdust. Took the brakes off the bike to clean them up with a toothbrush and mineral spirits. Man, do these things ever look cheap!

I don't know who makes Specialized's house brand (V-brake part# TX133), but I'm thinking these things have to go. And since I'll be replacing the brakes, I may as well replace the brake levers/shifter pods too! Oh, and a better rear derailleur and bottom bracket wouldn't hurt either.

I didn't really plan on upgrading this bike so quickly, but since I'm going to be stripping it down to the frame I may as well put on some better bits. It does have a nice frame (E5) to work with. I guess this will be my winter project.

Today I repacked the sealed headset bearings of the Sirrus. Wasn't sure if I should do it or not, but I found this tutorial, which made it look simple. And simple it was.

https://www.pinkbike.com/news/Tech-T...g-Headset.html

I also scuffed up the brake pads with sandpaper so a fresh new surface is showing. The bike has been cleaned top to bottom and is ready for reassembly. I haven't cleaned/repacked the wheel hubs yet, but I have a new wheelset coming. Just ordered today.

Nice to hear that your Sirrus came with sealed bearings! Mine (2010 Comp) came with those horrible 'caged bearing' things; had to have the entire headset replaced to get rid of them, and that was an expensive pain in the rear because that year's Sirrus Comp used a proprietary design from Specialized.

What wheelset?

This is the second set of these I've bought this month. One set for each hybrid.

I have a very similar set of wheels(for my Toughroad) using those rims and the weight seems the same, but I am a very heavy bastard who easily destroys regular wheels.

That wheel seems a tad out of place for a Sirrus?

Weight aside, those are really nice wheels. Deore hubs are really durable, assuming semi-regular cleaning/servicing of the cups/cones, and the inside rim width provides a nice seat for tires. Good choice, I say.

Thanks. I have the 26" size for my MTB too. I'm pretty good about servicing my bikes. And I don't get them near water so there is about a zero point zero chance of any grease getting contaminated.

I cleaned my chain. Thoroughly. And gave it a paraffin coating.

It looks all shiny and new and everything glides a lot better.

That is a great rack and trunk bag combo.

Hell yea, I dig the Ibera Rack.. its solid and a great price.. It bolted up nice to the Toughroad..
There are much better bags out there.. but once I complete the Ibera System I will use that until I need something more..

Oiled chain after replacing yet another broken spoke. This makes 8 all on the rear drive side.

^^^ Sounds like it's time for a new rear wheel or a rebuild.

I always break spokes on the drive side too. Not sure why it works out that way. One would think the breakage would be random.

Pretty sure the swallower angle on the drive side puts more stress on the spoke. The non drive side has more give.

Yep, it depends on how the wheel is dished.

Those are some heavy ass tires! I guess you like them puncture proof.. Didn't they make the bike sluggish?

Actually they came with the bike when I bought it. The original owner had the OEM tires swapped for these. I do notice the bike is a little sluggish but they are great tires. I may get some different ones once these wear out.

I'm sure you can get some Schwalbe made tires with similar characteristics that are a couple hundred grams lighter. If you're willing to trade off some of that puncture protection you can get great tires in the 400-500g range with plenty of volume. In my book, a light bike deserves somewhat light tires...
