Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you can do that you should be upgrading to Cat 2 soon enough.
How far are we talking here? 15 miles? 35 miles? 60 miles?

10 miles should do it. If you can maintain over 23mph in suburbia for 10 miles, contact me, we want you on Global Locate (if you're over 35 years old).

I'm going to sound like a total tool since I can't back it up, but I think I could do that. Avg 23 mph on a 10 mile USCF course with a TT bike equipped with Zipp wheels. Aero helmet would help too.

I think a better figure is to say 25 mph+

Oh, yeah OK. Let's see, what % of BF members even race? 10%? (I'm being generous). What % of USCF membership can even average 25 mph in a TT? 30%? (I'm being generous) Maybe? And what % of fitness cyclists does that comprise? .3%? Get a grip boys.

God this place is too stupid. It's like the Sean Hannity Fan Club.

Jeez, even I've done over 23mph for 10 miles! This is on a suburban open road course. I'm not even remotely one of the faster ones at that TT.

I could do it, but not for much longer than 10 miles. I've done 22mph over 7 miles and I'm in better shape now than I was then.

hmmm, I rode an 80 mile course this year alone, rollers all the way, 4 hours, at 153abpm/~85% MHR or tempo if you like. 53yrs old. pretzels are better aligned than my busted up body. And I have a 6 year old ti bike that weighs with open pro 3x wheels.

I'm putting just a little pressure on the pedals on the climbs to see how you react.

post this on your frig.

Best average speed ever: 20 mph for an 8 mile commute home during rush hour. This was only possible thanks to a few factors:

1. Work is 100 feet higher than home
2. Heavy traffic can be great for drafting
3. I had a very nice tailwind for 7 of those 8 miles, but a very bad headwind for 1 mile

On a longer, out and back course, best I ever did was 18.2mph for 62 miles. Again, I had some help though.

1. Almost completely flat terrain (south Jersey along the coast)
2. Got an early start which meant my headwind starting out was less than my tailwind coming home
3. Very few required stops along the way
4. Drafted off some old folks for a few miles who were driving at 20-25mph

I was still really proud of that speed though as it hurt bad even with all of the "help".

Pcad, speaking of Global Locate. I was riding around the Old Tappan Resevoir a few weeks ago and I passed an asian guy with that kit on. Kinda a big dude. Guess you know him.

That would just be altimeter error. The finish was on the other side of the same street as the start. No net elevation loss.

I averaged 16.1 mph over a very flat 30 miles today. In my defense, I have the flu.

Man I feel lame 'cause my average speeds are 14.5-15.2mph. I'm nearly 5' 9" and weigh 230lbs on a good day. I figure I'm doing good to be able to ride for one hour and maybe 1.5hrs on a Saturday. I don't know if I'll ever be able to average 20mph or better, unless I find a ride that's nearly all downhill and that's hard to do in CO.

My fastest ever was 35.3 kmh for 100 km, but I had a strong tailwind 80% of the time. Without wind I can do about 29 kph for that distance, 30-32 for 50 km.

To get your real average speed:

- sum all the miles from your log
- sum all the "hours riding" from your log
- divide...

You'll be quite dissapointed.

There's a difference between riding 23mph on a course through suburbia and riding through suburbia with the normal road conditions you will encounter. I agree that if the course is flat, open, and wind is not a factor, 23mph for 10 miles for someone over 35 is achievable and is not necessarily bluster.

Just because you're not one of the faster guys at a USCF TT doesn't mean you're not one of the faster guys on BF. You are. You could be the slowest guy at the TT and be one of the faster guys on BF.

There are something like EIGHT MILLION cyclists in the US who fit the BF mold (i.e., they ride 3+ times weekly as a hobby or sport). There are what, 50,000 licensed USCF racers? I'm a fat 50 year old and I'm faster than at least a third of the licensed racers. Which means that there are how many faster cyclists than me in the US? 30,000? That would mean there are at least 7.97 MILLION who are slower. So for umd, that means 7.99 MILLION who are slower. But we're all talking about average speeds here half the time as if everybody is a Cat 2/3 racer.

That's the point of this thread. We are not all Cat 2/3 racers umd. YOU are. How many miles did you ride last year dude? 15,000? I rode 12,000. How many rode that many miles here? You can count them on one friggin hand. All I'm saying is that the average speed talk here is more inflated than my own ego. And that's saying something.

Think a lot of riders cruse along at 18 to 20mph and assume that's thier average for the ride. I long ago accepted my lack of TT ability. My best year as a 2 im not certain I could have broken an hr even if you would have strapped a bomb to my *** set to go off at 1:01.

I think these statistics sometimes get lost in the testosterone fest that is this forum. To fit in and compete in all the trash talking here, people inflate their averages and probably lie to themselves in the process. When you factor that many people here always ride alone and consequently have nothing but BF BS to compare themselves against, there's even more of a complete lack of perspective.

Wow! The NomadVW is alive!

I thought you had dropped off the face of the earth! Glad to hear you are still riding. I started viewing this form a couple of weeks ago to check out the tandem site. I'm looking at buying a racing tandem for next summer. Anyway, glad to see that you are still cycling! Man, do I ever miss Japan! Bahrain sucks, sucks, sucks!!! I have been going to Spain & France to cycle.

Cheers,
Your Japan cycling buddy!
