Yo the air here has been weeeiiiiird - that off gray blue sky that fades to slate the closer to the horizon you get. Smells like the inside of a rubbermaid container!

High temps forecast for today. I was out early on the TT bike on Fiesta. 20’ (3/2’ over unders) and then two laps of low cadence. VO2 work went well although the last 3/2 is always hard. I thought I had a 25/11 on the TT bike and it was a 25/12. I changed it to an 23/11. I rode most of the low cadence work in a 54/11. Although, I was still above 60 rpms on the faster, downwind section.
With 1and 1/2 to go, sweat started to pour out of the front of my helmet streaming on my glasses but not in my eyes.
Air quality ... moderate 63 with dominant pollutant PM2.5. Tomorrow will be good.

Going to do some 8 min efforts on Soledad in a bit, hope the heat isn't too bad...
Also did you SD guys hear about the changes for Camp Pendleton? Looks like you need to get a month pass at the visitor center now and need to carry it with you to get through v_v
Guess we'll be seeing more folks riding on the i5!

Been doing some riding here and there trying not to lose fitness but haven't been getting any long rides nor weekday intervals for a few weeks. Yesterday I woke up early due to 4th of July day drinking leading to an early bedtime. So I carried that early rising through today and woke up at 5 (usually the time of my middle of the night wakefulness) to get in a long ride before work. 84 miles with a bunch of climbing and a short super intense group ride I've never done before. It's 15 minutes of HARD riding and a sprint. Small group got even smaller when a few guys kept trading 400+ watt pulls. 310 might be my workday TSS record.

RacingBear
Summited Mt. Rainier couple weeks ago. Legs have been **** ever since. Lakeport was hanging on. Did Davis and was fading fast towards the end of M35+ 1/2/3. For E3 was just there for a ride. Didn't really have snap in the legs. Bleh.

Very cool about the summit! Did you do any running and/or hiking to condition the legs?

Did the River Ride this morning. Evan Huffman turned up and I was afraid he'd just destroy us all but he just rotated like the rest of us. He rode off the front on the first sprint and stayed out of the chaos of the second one. I'm sure it was like a recovery day for him.

Zwifted and skipped the Raincross, and at least 2 who didn't got sick as it topped out at 118. Adding to that, there is a forest fire 10 miles from my house and its very smoky outside.
Either going to do GMR or Zwift tomorrow, the smoke and heat aren't a good combo.

Gravel ride this morning up to Francis peak with some buddies. I came in to posession of a Crusher in Tushar entry for next weekend, so I guess that'll be my first ever gravel race. Planning on using my mtb (full sus Scalpel with good lockouts) and some 43c gravel tires. It felt fast today, only thing I'm lacking is a bigger chainring. 30x11 isn't gonna be fun to spin on the longer pavement sections, but I'll be happy about the 30x42 I've got to climb with.

Racing has been terrible, ive been dropped in just about every race ive done this year. Cant get more than 1 or 2 decent rides a week without feeling like I want to be done and home after an hour. Earlier in the season I blamed my ****ty winter training, but at this point I cant use that excuse. Im still going to ride, but not with any seriousness. Rode the mtb saturday and felt good the first half hour, then it was meh.
Started running again, just going to take it easy on the bike for a little bit. Have a doctor appointment at the end of the month, going to ask about having blood work done just to try and rule anything out..who knows, but its been a ****ty season.
I might do the club race tomorrow.

Vacation riding, volume stuff. About 450 TSS in 3 rides over the past 4 days. We started in Southern Utah where I did an epically beautiful ride called Thunder Mountain, Bryce like. The trail was dry and not in great shape (very loose) and parts of it were technically beyond me but it was well worth doing, amazing to be able to ride in a place like that. Hoodoo madness.
Now we are in Park City on a timeshare stay. I literally roll my bike out the lobby of the Marriott, swing my leg over the top and start riding. Huge network of trails on Park City Mtn (where we’re staying) and easy to ride to other ski mountains and access their trails (Deer Valley or the Canyons), or to head further up the mountain to Wasatch Crest. Great variety of trails, well marked, and lots of off-bike stuff to do the rest of the day.
From day 1, just exploring a bit
From yesterdays ride, I rode over to Deer Valley and then back on the bike path.

Vacation week. Couple of easy rides down the beach from PCB towards Destin and back. Work travel is going to screw everything up, so I’m probably going to need to load up the stress before I travel. I need an Orucase or something.
Plus side is family activities will return me to Chicago-land just in time to do a few of the Intelligentsia Cup Races. Hopefully I have some fitness for that.

@heathpack. Nice pics. How is it cycling at 6500 feet?

Did part of a granfondo yesterday, sucked. Well it was fine and survived the first HC climb but after a long descent and the road started to pick up again my upper legs decided to cramp at km 94 of 144. Called my wife to get me but with her encouragement I managed to shake off the cramps enough to make it through another smaller climb and long descent before the final HC climb. But at that point I was hot and mentally checked out after the leg cramps that I just didn’t want to do another 19km of climbing, even though that was my main motivation, so I bailed. Did 78miles with about 11.5k feet of climbing. Besides the cramping it was an awesome ride and some amazing vistas, and my rental bike had a 34t in the rear which helped keep most climbing to a chill pace.

Surprisingly not that bad. Once I get up mountain a little bit, I’m at 7000-8500 ft according to Garmin. If I do Wasatch Crest that will be at 9000 ft. Not been pushing too hard but I definitely feel it anyway.
The weird thing is how hot it feels, I have sweat pouring down my face and I look down and my Garmin says 72F. It’s a little windless when I’m down low, get cooler and breezier when I climb up a ways. I guess it’s the still air.
I imagined I’d buy a lift pass to skip a bunch of climbing but the lifts don’t start until 10am. Oh well, better for me to do the climbing anyway.

very cool @Heathpack! I'm planning on renting a cabin with friends for a long weekend in Big Bear in a few weeks. They'll probably take the lift up each time, but I'm sure I'll mix it up .
We're staying right on the lake as well. Isn't there good riding around the lake as well? Are there trails that circumnavigate the lake that I can reach from our cabin? If so, awesome.
Any other tips for when I'm up there? I think I recall you posting about Big Bear MTB recently.
