I think the issue here is UK vs US. In the US, designs are protected by "design patents", a subset of patent law (think Apple suing Samsung for use of rounded rectangles on cell phones). In the UK, designs are protected by copyright. Because in the US designs are handled by patents, they expire much more rapidly than in the UK.

As Brompton is a UK manufacturer, they sued another company for copyright violation. I believe Brompton likely cannot sue in the US for design patent violation, assuming they even held one, because of the age of the design.

Okay, it's obvious at this point Dahon is just messing with us! Almost the same day Dahon showed a Brompton-with-our-latches design @ the USA's Interbike, they displayed this (1, 2) design for the 2015 Japanese market: improved "curled" frame, large chainwheel, detachable (rather than folding) pedals. This looks identical, other than paint color, to the bike they displayed last spring in Taipei.

Tangentially, the rear wheel can be removed without messing with the chain tensioner.

Hmm. Didn't have any trouble starting that video @3:41 when I linked to it in post #1 of this thread.

Sorry, only read the last page.

I meant: The software that runs this forums doesn't allow inserting a video that includes time info in the URL (as opposed to simply copy/pasting a URL).

I cant wait to see those two models in the flesh.

Two different designs! What's up with that? Is one a 'decoy'? Are they going to build and market them both, and under the same model name? In the time honored Curl tradition, maybe they won't actually put either into production!

I note that in addition to the different frames and folds and pedals, the USA/Europe shown Curl is fitted with a Shimano Nexus 3-speed hub while the Taiwan/Japan shown Curl has a SRAM iMotion3.

Perhaps Dr. Hon handed off the basic concept to two different product development teams - but I'm at a loss to understand a motive for that approach.

It's about time someone offered an alternative to the Brompton that would be as compact but ride and brake better.

My dream: Belt drive and disk brakes.

I guess one result I'd like to see out of all the Dahon Curl soap opera is Bromptons 'encouraged' to bring the execution of their brilliant concept into the 1990s: lighter weight via the use of chromoly steel, forged dropouts, twiddly knobs replaced by latches and the use of 130mm OLD IGHs.

FWIW, the 2015 Curl will supposedly will have a 7-speed Shimano IGH.

Well, this is certainly one of the arguments against IP protection like patent law and design rights.

I'm still real interested in this:

As with the previous model, this bike also features a streamlined premium Dalloy hydroformed frame with concealed hinge, along with custom designed narrow wheels and drivetrain. The addition of a 3-speed Shimano compact rear derailleur increases this bike's range, whilst shifting is done with the flick of the heel, eliminating the need for a shifter and cable.
Anybody seen vids of this in action...?

The EEZZ3 shown @ Interbike had a regular old twist grip shifter on the handlebars. It also had a very tight ratio 9-11-13T cogset. I wonder if the 11 and 13T cogs are standard and could be swapped out to make a more useful 9-12-16T cogset?

Upon closer examination, I believe the Taiwan/Japan bike is fitted with a Shimano Nexus SG-7R46 seven speed hub.

I assume it's what's in the Strida EVO.

Doesn't Schlumpf work the same way too?

It's strange/too bad that the Curl 2015 doesn't have the screw holes in the front, unlike some of its other models:

It's a very useful feature to hold a bag when commuting.

It looks as though the standard caliper brake with top cable entry gets in the way of a luggage bracket. No front luggage option means the bike is really only 50% functional.

Where does that number come from? Do you have your own scale the Chagzuki scale of functionality? Of course you must have validated data to back up your scale. Some things posted on this board, border on ridiculous.

Unless the new.3sp shimano shifting system is based on a bb-center shifter, then, no, they don't work the same way... which is why I am curious.

The Strida and Schlumph are both in the BB;the Strida you back-pedal,the Schlumph you push in on the cranks. I tried Googling and couldn't find crap, but if memory serves, the EEZZ3's derailleur is shifted by back-pedaling.
