If you look at our local monthly TT resuls, there is usually a few guys that go over 25 mph. The TT is 10 miles, so 24 minutes is 25mph. For example, here 5 out of 55 did it. If you click on the other dates for results, it is important to note that the course changed at some point and now has a net elevation gain of about 100 feet.
Edit: One of the names consistently around 25mph is also a BF member...
Edit 2: pcad, I do not disagree with your premise. There are certainly a lot of fast guys. The fastest ones seem to be really modest about it, and the ones that think they are really fast are the most vocal about it I wonder how people that are reading really fast speeds even know they are supposed to calibrate their computers...

Here are my numbers from my bike journal log:
rides this year: 71
Miles: 1,142
Avg speed: 15 mph
Not that great, but I don't think it's bad since I just started riding seriously last January...

Max speed 16mph? Are you sure that's entirely safe with that dog in the basket and all?

10 is a lot better with bikes or cars around. 10 is more typicall.
The dog is harnessed in the middle of the basket under his belly very securely. Double straps in case one breaks. Not a spring loaded clip connection, a chain link with a threaded bolt opening/closing on one side.

There's always someone faster.
our club does weekly TTs, and there are probably 6 guys who exceed 25mph on 10-mile events, 4 who do the same on 20km, and 1 who is consistently over that speed on 40km events.
My own speeds do not get me into that echelon (YET), as my best 10 miler is just over 24mph. This takes an effort which is near bonk-level at the end of the event.
However...
power is something that one can increase with time and training. There is a reason why the TT is called the "race of truth" and one cannot make enormous increases in TT speeds without spending a lot of time training. There is no ceiling though! There is a guy (over 55) who does not belong to the club but is relatively local and is closer to 30mph on shorter TTs, and I know another ex-racer who could do 29mph. These guys would obliterate any current club rider, and yet they both know people who can obliterate them. International professionals are doing shorter time trial events at 31mph plus now.
My point, if you have yet to figure it out, is that the numbers themselves are irrelevant, save being used as a measuring stick against YOUR OWN PERSONAL NUMBERS.
There is a reason why you are supposed to ignore the other riders on the TT course. Ride your own speeds. Don't be a fool and try to compare yourself against a rider who produces 200% of your power. You will never make a 200% jump in power that way. The power increases will come if you train based on WHERE YOUR POWER IS NOW and add to it incrementally.
grrrrrr

Just because you're not one of the faster guys at a USCF TT doesn't mean you're not one of the faster guys on BF. You are. You could be the slowest guy at the TT and be one of the faster guys on BF.
There are something like EIGHT MILLION cyclists in the US who fit the BF mold (i.e., they ride 3+ times weekly as a hobby or sport). There are what, 50,000 licensed USCF racers? I'm a fat 50 year old and I'm faster than at least a third of the licensed racers. Which means that there are how many faster cyclists than me in the US? 30,000? That would mean there are at least 7.97 MILLION who are slower. So for umd, that means 7.99 MILLION who are slower. But we're all talking about average speeds here half the time as if everybody is a Cat 2/3 racer.
That's the point of this thread. We are not all Cat 2/3 racers umd. YOU are. How many miles did you ride last year dude? 15,000? I rode 12,000. How many rode that many miles here? You can count them on one friggin hand. All I'm saying is that the average speed talk here is more inflated than my own ego. And that's saying something.

God help us. Nothing is worse than being pwned by a Fred. That's just brutal.

There is always a bigger Fred...
Today, I was 2:30 into my 3:00 ride all decked out in day glow yellow wearing a CamelBak and out of the corner of my I caught a cyclist coming off the covered bridge making right hand turn behind me...
I picked up the pace a bit, but he was right there...
Then I hear him say "want to draft me"...
He is wearing shorts, tee shirt, purple helmet, and Birkenstocks, riding a rusty flat bar 1970 Univega with knobby tires...
Now I am riding a Scott CR1 with a PT so I could not lower myself to draft him...
Thinking fast, I struck up a conversation...
He ended up being a real nice guy. He was interested in all the stats I had at my finger tips...
I suggested he get a road bike as he was a pretty strong rider...
At least he didn't drop me...

The fastest non-pro that I know wears T-shirts, has never shaved his legs, and rides a 90s 'dale with downtube shifters.
He can (when on form) drop anyone around here and is former state champ of AZ. Probably doesn't even know what "fred" means. He is too busy riding past you and winning the race to care about that BS.

Thankfully for every 100 Freds who try, only 2-3 succeed. With any luck I only run into one Nightmare Fred each season. But when it does happen it is rather nasty.

stole your bike
Sometimes it's nice to live in an average speed wonderland, especially after a hard ride that leaves your legs hurting because that little read out on your computer makes you feel like you were doing ok even though deep down you know that a tail wind was more responsible for your average speed being higher than yesterday.

Hmmm, (8,000,000 - 30,000) x .02 = 159,400 fast freds just waiting for you! I think I know one of them. He rides a huge Rivendell in SPD sandals. Really.

All this talk of 25mph TTs, tonight was the local TT. I was sick so I didn't ride but I was there with my camera. Some of these guys take their TTs very seriously...
Some serious speed
Some TT bling. Note the name on the top tube. His nickname is "Blinger"
More of Blinger's bling
Mr. Chicken Ranch can move. Did the "race of truth" in Solvang at the tour of california and beat several of the pro's times. There is a video about it on testrider.com
But Gary is usually the fastest. He had the all-time record on the old 10 mile course of 21:28, or 27.8mph...
And Tom reguarly does 25mph on this course, although I didn't note his time today.
There was a recumbent too. One of the slowest riders on the course as far as I could tell

You got it easy. My RT to climb Bear Mountain is more like 175 miles. Plus I have to ride through 8,000,000 traffic signals in Queens to get there.
