I've got a leangth of a big old lead pipe for making jaw covers, but copper might be a healthier choice.

Gifted from a friend who found it at his local dump. I’d like to put some canti brakes on it. 700c wheels I think are original, I’ve heard that if it had been a wheel conversion from 27” to 700c it gets tricky. Any and all help/advice is welcome.

Super find. Romic was a fairly prolific custom frame builder in Houston. Old pal did some research years back and created this web article (note, not an HTTPS secure site, so at your own peril - I opened it and it has what I remembered).
Newer canti calipers may be difficult to fit, but many have vertical slots that may accommodate a 700c to 27" distance. Given this is a touring model, may have been built for 27" wheels.

Nah, dive right in, especially if you happen to have the other set of wheels you might need, none of this is life threatening and you can always use extra parts to suss out ones just like this with less drama.

I'm curious what that single threaded boss on the underneath of the downtube is for, anyone know?? Generator?

Picked up a 1987 Diamondback Apex. Nothing special model wise, but came with some nice parts, most notably the nearly NOS Suntour XC II pedals. And I am a sucker for thumb shifters.
In my town, I am the only buyer of vintage MTBs. Over the last year, it's all I have bought.
If I needed another one, I would refresh for personal use. But I have that covered. Refreshing for the local market means I would lose $100 on it, and buyer would likely part it out. So I will save that additional step and part out myself. I did need the cartridge bearing wheels (sort of).

there are two bosses there. Curious, tell me what you’d build it up with, I could use some help. I think it had a 27” wheelset, clearly cantilever brakes, bar end shifters? Seems it came stock with 105 components, even the hubs are 105, and it has Campagnolo Gamma Oxide Strada rims.

Actually, if you look closer at photo #4 you can see that there are two of those female threaded bosses.

Probably should have stripped this at the yard, but its kind of diminishing returns when the aluminum bits cost 3x as much when separated from the frame and it was cold this morning.. Its an interesting frame but unfortunately the seat stays are crushed. I might keep the fork to practice straitening. I'm particularly digging the Blue Line GT rear derailleur. I'm going to swap the long cage onto a Black Line group set.
And I'll get a bunch more parts in the "French" bin..

Yeah, but maybe not. That thing looks like it was pulled out of a lake or river, and as bad as the rust is, makes me wonder what the inside of the frame looks like. A person would have to remove the seat and use a bright flashlight, not a cell phone light, and look all the way down the tube to see the bottom bracket area.

The "surface rust" is a little weird, because I think the frame is fully chromed. Maybe it was a red oxide paint of some sort. I'll investigate further tomorrow.
