The heavy kickstand and chainring guard both can be really handy, and since there's no shifter bosses, any kind of bar- or stem-mounted shifters fit right in.
Cool bottle cage, looks like genuine Schwinn?
M3rle's front shifting woes, has the crankset been replaced and possibly positioned too far to the right?
Might try slightly bending every 5th tooth on the big ring toward the left side of the bike, to better pick up the chain.
I've not had this shifting problem on a Schwinn using stock cranksets that I can recall, but a better chain with bulged outer plates could only help.

This is the way I like to see these Schwinns, i.e. as close to stock as the rider can tolerate and still enjoy riding it.

But yes, the bike is heavy. And even this Superior frame is heavy now that it's down to bare bones. I just enjoy the ride that these frames had. Granted, I've never been a weight weenie. I've always felt that if it was a big deal, I should just be working on dropping a few pounds off my frame before I look to the bike's frame for grams...

Cool catalog scan. I have the 47 310 I still need to mount. I also have the metal leg band that came with it.
Dddd, I did repack the BB. Do you think I reinstalled it out of position? I'm also using a basic KMC chain. I haven't had a chance to fiddle with the fd but will consider your advice.

There are certain inexpensive KMC "Z"-series chains that do have bulged sideplates, and that shift very well, but I prefer their X-series chains for any riding that goes into the thousands of miles, since they last longer.
The only assembly error that I can think of that would move the crankset slightly toward the driveside would be installing the bearing retainer backwards.
I might laugh at you, but I've done this myself a time or two. I first did this when I was 7 or 8 years old, on my Schwinn front hub rebuild, only to discover my mistake 6 or 7 years later!

I recently finished a restoration of a 1973 Schwinn Super Sport in sunset orange. It was for a John who wanted what everyone wanted when they where a kid, especially for those who grew up on a Varsity like me. John made a fantastic choice with the aged leather pieces. Did Schwinn call this color Radiant Coppertone? But then again it looks more greenish. I suffer, however, from a certain amount of color deficient in my vision, so sometimes I think I see a color that is actually not there.

My $20 '73 Opaque Blue Super Sport. It's riding on 27x1 Araya rims(the bike came to me with non-matching Belgian Weinmanns that were in rough shape) with a 6-speed Shimano freewheel. I've upgraded the RD to a Suntour AR unit and the crank to a Shimano 600EX Arabesque unit.

HA! Tell you what, if you're ever up my way, bring the SS. We'll trade bikes for a ride. Oh yeah, BYW feel free to show your bike off a bit, it's worthy. I love it, it's like an upgraded version with the integrated hanger and shifter bosses. Really cool.

Just scored a 1970 Super Sport today. The serial number is on the headtube and it looks to be JF 50596, the "F" is not totally clear and it looks like it didn't stamp completely. It has Huret forged dropouts and unfortunately some knucklehead "Drewed" the hanger to put a Suntour Honor clawed rear derailleur on there
. What the heck were they thinking? Hack the frame for a Suntour Honor? Really? The rear wheel is a steel replacement with a QR high flange alloy hub, the stem is wrong, the safety levers were removed, and it's missing the dust cap on the drive side pedal. On the plus side, the Brooks B15 is there and looks to be in excellent shape, kickstand is intact, and the rest looks pretty good. I'd like to bring it back as close to stock as possible without breaking the bank. I'm thinking relacing the wheel with a rim that's close to original, changing the stem, and tracking down some turkey levers. I've got a Suntour GT rear derailleur, a wide range 5 speed Suntour freewheel, and a 21.1 "comp forged" quill stem. It'll get new shoes and consumables as well as cleaning and lubing the bearings. If anyone has any suggestions on parts selection, I'd love to hear them. Now for the pics.

That's too bad about the drewed Huret dropout, they could have added a washer without having to cut the original hanger.

I was looking forward to fabricating the washer. It's not the end of the world, but it sure is disappointing.
