managed to make it up to the greater la area this morning. high clouds at the start kept it nice and cool. hadn't ascended lower mt. baldy road in years but both
the experience and the pavé still suck. things improved immediately after a quick left on grr and up to cow saddle. saw like 3 cars and about 6 cyclists on grr/gmr.
sun came out and it was a nice day up there.

I did 35 miles and 2400 feet of climbing this Wednesday. I opted to take the gravel bike mainly for comfort and I was being lazy and just felt like spinning instead of grinding up the hills. I first headed over to Elysian Park, then cruised Echo Park, gunned it on Sunset Blvd., climbed over to Griffith Park, descended and hopped on the LA River bike path and rode back home in time for parent duties! Cycling through LA, you really need to be on your A game. I almost saw a pedestrian get run over and most cars give zero Fs about bikes since everyone is in a rush!

Yesterday I did a very quick (for me, LOL) run up and down PCH for about 27 miles. I'm trying to integrate some interval (HIIT) training into my usually sluggish rides. I've been stuck on the same plateau for way too long and it's time to get things moving. I have to tell you one thing though... after really pushing myself I feel a whole lot different for the rest of the day (in a good way).

Did not have much time due to a family party so did my fav approx 2 hour dirty ride.
Dont have rides like this in Dallas and checking out of the HotelCa soon so this hit the spot.

Temecula Pauba DePortolo loop.
Horse ranches around the foothills of Mt Palomar.
Mostly dirt with some too deep sandy spots off the trails even too much for my racing hard tail mtn bike. Love this ride.

Dreary is the word. Did seven repeats along Turnbull Canyon Rd. Lower back started talking to me so called it quits.

23 miles down PCH but was cut short since they had PCH closed off at Warner for the HB Marathon. I was bummed that they did this so I turned around and headed home a little short of my daily goal of 30 miles.

Sunday I did 42 slightly damp miles + 2300 feet of climbing with my buddies here in LA. We were running a bit late so we cut out the Elysian Park climb and opted to roll straight to Griffith Park to climb the Observatory. Even with the overcast weather, there were still quite a few cyclists out. Anyways, I forget how much easier it is to ride with a group, you can easily tuck behind someone and save your legs on the draft! We blasted through the LA River bike path and my legs still felt way fresh to power up the climb...though my friends were already spent! Lol

After our ride, we gorged ourselves on super spicy Thai street food at a low key weekend food stall near downtown.

Saturday - Dirty quickie with myself in the early evening after an afternoon plane trip home from helping my kid move into their new apartment in Eugene, OR. Legs felt fresh and body felt ready to work. I improved my PR on the 2.5mi climb to Brown Saddle by over 40sec (previously set on my gravel bike). This climb has enough rocky/rough sections that neither MTB or gravel bike seem to be clearly advantageous. That said, the MTB is the clear winner for going downhill.


Sunday - The damp ground and drizzle talked me out of riding in the real world, so I did a 2+hour Zwift session, maintaining a steady tempo power output (180-200w) with a pacer-bot group. The last 15 minutes were a real struggle, but I hit my goal of 50 virtual miles in the session, and congratulated myself with a good effort that will pay off on future rides.

I did a quick 21 miles on Thursday. I can already feel the fall winds kick in. I made a quick stop during the ride and had to get my body moving again just so I wouldn't get cold!

Thursday - 25 mi road ride. A couple of Z2 tempo laps around the Rose Bowl loop, 3 hot laps with the Thursday night ride, and a moderate tempo spin home. Legs felt really good. With the fast group, I had some pretty good efforts, but never felt significantly stretched to my limits. That said, more laps at that pace probably would have pushed me to my breaking point. I'm happy with the way my body is responding to recent work.

thursday niter group ride, buddy just build the new 23' allez sprint. Color way is so nice makes me want one. He said it's stiff and feels all of the bumps. His build w Ultegra Di2 12s, zip 303s, still dirty from Nate Harrison grade couple of weeks ago LOL. He's running 54/39 rotor rings on DA cranks, and 11-30 cassette in back.

So I was wrong above. Today was not a good day for me to ride SCR.

I saw overcast skies and thought, what better time to get in some climbing? Felt strong climbing Pioneer and Jamboree, even pleasant with the breeze. But the wind picked up on SCR past the toll road. Strong winds with stronger gusts made the ride quite nerve wracking, and I had to do every descent -- even the little ones -- in the motor vehicle lane for fear of being blown into the ditch or a passing motor vehicle. Thankfully the passing traffic did not seem too annoyed. Got to intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and decided that I had enough but could not get an Uber. Was messaging my wife to arrange a pickup when I saw and waved to a gentleman passing in his VW Golf Alltrack / Jetta Sportwagen with an MTB mounted on top. I explained that I was too chicken to continue onward in this wind and he drove me (and my bike) back to the plaza on Jamboree and SCR. Super nice guy.

oooh...personally woulda hit the taco bell at the jamboree/scr plaza (again) to (eventually) lose more weight but possibly just me. at least you got out. nothing ventured, nothing gained.
survive and advance. silverado canyon road, modjeska canyon road and the latter half of scr await! that stretch from the plaza to cook's corner, then up (and down) live oak road into and out of
trabuco canyon is a must-do for socal cyclists. so sweet in the (especially) spring, fall and winter.

I have never ridden any of the side streets from SCR. They all look like they end in dirt roads, and I am not fit enough to take my gravel bike.

Just wrapped up a 36 mile ride and 2700 feet of climbing. During my ride, I pulled up next to a young Japanese cyclist who was on his final leg of a NY to LA road touring trip. Big props to him! Anywways, I keep thinking bikes are pretty cool, they can take you places just with your own two legs!
