Unfortunately the problem with theft is only going to get worse in most locales, There's really not much of a reason for someone not to steal. Their chances of being caught are minimal, then if they get caught they won't suffer any real consequences.

If I take the risk of leaving my bike unattended, I would NEVER expect another cyclists to put his life on the line to prevent the theft of my lousy albeit expensive machine. That would be on me.
I stay out of cities. Of the 4 times a knife has been pulled on me, it was always in a city. Avoidance is the best defense.

I just avoid cites, problem solved.
If I lived in such a bad area that theft was a concern, I would bring the bike into the store with me. I think trying to stop a thief taking someone's bike is very, very risky and not worth anyone's life. One of the times a knife was pulled on me, I had given the pan handling person some money and they saw I had some cash. They followed me. I was more stupid when young. They did not get my money. I would give it up now as an oldie....for sure. I would not give my life, that I would defend appropriately. But a bike? No way.

If didn't have to work and if money was not an issue i wouldn't be living in the city...I would love to live out in some small town in a rural or wilderness area but there are no jobs in those type of places, so i am forced to live in the suburbs close to the city so I can make a living.
