It was about 35 and sunny this morning, which is actually unusually warm for this time of year in the Boston area, so I headed out for a ride. I’ve been meaning to take an inaugural run on a recent build, a consequence of the great rccardr sell-off of 2019. Doc had this 1978 Davidson Custom set up with early Dura Ace and a 6-speed friction drivetrain. I’ve riffed off of that theme and set it up with a mix of various era Dura Ace and 7-speed indexed downtube shifters.










Wheelset consists of Velocity rims and American Classic hubs, Nitto stem and bars, Brooks Swift with Ti rails. Ride was really superb. I was on a relatively hilly course (1500 ft of climbing over 31 miles), and the bike climbed and descended really well. I need to slide the saddle back a 1/2 cm, but that’s it to really have it dialed in. It’s a keeper! Thanks, Doc!

Here's a better shot, before paint. The rear chrome is original, and cleaned up nice after stripping off the green paint, which kind of preserved it. It has the separate derailleur hanger, not integrated to the dropout. The previous guy ground off the cable guides, so I used a clamp on one on the chain stay. I found an NOS chrome fork, and had the upper half painted along with the frame.

I stripped the paint, assembled the bike, and rode it "naked" for about 3 months before committing to paint. I have since gone to a 52t big ring (50t shown here) and a 34t 6 speed Megarange freewheel.

56 degrees with amazing sunny blue skies today! Forecast is for snow tomorrow, so I jumped on the Bianchi for a quick spin. This the McCormick Observatory at University of Virginia. Couple of 15% stingers to get up here.

I rode my first bike commute of the year yesterday. The usual, 17 miles in, 18 miles home. Temperature about 28degF in the morning, 35degF on the return. Not a bad day, a bit of ice to work around but mostly a good day.

I rather envy someone with a doable, decent commute during the winter months. I've got about 4 miles of narrow, poorly-maintained country road just to get out to the main road, which is a state highway. Then another 17 miles of that into work. Open. Windy. Cars going 60-ish rain or shine. I tried it a few times (Winter summer no problem), but it sucked all the joy out of it. Good thing I'm retired now!

He! I hear you. I could retire if I wanted (I'm now 71) and have other nice options for going to work (I bought a Porsche 718 Cayman last year, superb vehicle and gas-efficient too!). But the bike commute is good for my general health and keeps me grounded too.

10 mile post office run on the '78 Super Course today to return a gift that was too small. I guess "Large" doesn't always work any more. It was a nice day, sunny, mid 60s, not much wind. I'm trying to see how many days I can ride this year, so far 8 in a row, every day of 2020. How long can I keep it going? Rain predicted tomorrow, might be a challenge. Anybody else been on the bike every day this year?

I've been on a bike or gone for a run everyday so far this year. Might take tomorrow off, however (though I'll still bike commute around 6-7 miles). Forecast high is right around freezing but low 20s and strong north wind when I need to head out.

If I could design a lightweight, full-faced cycling helmet, with full defrost/defog capabilities, I'd be rich. Might as well throw in some comms and HUD display while I'm at it.

Near-constant rain has kept me off the bike for the first 8 days of the New Year. I'm hoping we dry up soon because I've installed some new parts recently and need to get out for a test-ride!

Just got my bike back from the shop. Bent hanger and worn out chain among other things made shift all but enjoyable. Fixed and rode my usual 30 mile loop. Would post pictures, but it’s mostly through neighborhoods.
