This is my experience also. I used to be able to do it on a track bike/fixie, but have the same issues on a road bike. Plus the number of seconds I can hold it on a road bake has decreased with age. Good thing SPD cleats are easy to release (especially the Shimano SH-56 version), especially compared to old school grooved cleats and straps.
